Infographic: How Long Were Election Day Lines in Your State?

<snip>

A new analysis by MIT political science professor Charles Stewart III (illustrated in an infographic below) shows the wide disparities in time spent on line by voters across the fifty states and across different demographic groups. The differences by state are striking: Vermont voters waited an average of 2 minutes to vote, while Florida voters waited an average of 45 minutes (the national average was 14 minutes). Overall, African-American and Latino voters waited nearly twice as long on Election Day as white voters did, and rural voters had much shorter waits than suburban and urban voters.

Was this based on a voter survey or determined by observation?

I live in one of those white states in the upper left corner.

Mail in voting is the way to go.

So I avoided any lines. But by TV news reports, the lines were fairly long here in the Atlanta area. I don't know why others don't vote by mail or maybe they just like standing in line for hours.

I waited about 30 minutes. I think a lot of it had to do with people wanting to cast their vote at the first opportunity on the first day.

lines were much less during most of early voting from what I understand. I don't know many people who waited until election day to vote, so I'm not sure about that

It varied...I walked right in and voted, no wait whatsoever. My district probably has more elderly white voters than most, though. In minority districts of Miami-Dade, voters were waiting past 1AM Wednesday. So, obviously the intent was to disenfranchise minorities and other classes that vote mostly Dem. Guarding the right to vote is the whole purpose of the VRA, obviously its still needed.
