I reviewed just some of the states and couldn't help but notice that the main effects will be felt by the people least likely to be able to defend themselves - the single mother, children, the poor, the sick, students, etc. These are the downtrodden and not in a position to defend themselves nor speak up nor even be listened to if they do try and speak up.
It doesn't take a rocket scientist to see that the most vulnerable will be hurt the most by these sequester cuts. These are the programs that some of our more responsible elected officials have put into place to help these people and these are the first programs to go when they are looking to make cuts.
Unfortunately - most of us (the so-called middle class) won't be hurt too much. Our lives will go on as we've been functioning since the BushCo administration - day to day - from paycheck to paycheck. Somehow we'll survive these sequester cuts and won't be thinking about those that I speak to above - the downtrodden - that are really at the brunt of these cuts and will feel the effects firsthand.
Those that will be hurt will be ignored by the media and the message that will be conveyed by the media is that the sequester didn't hurt that much. In that respect they will say that President Obama overplayed his hand on the sequester and cried wolf.
Looking at Wall Street - it doesn't look like they are taking this sequester that badly. They're close to breaking stock market records. Now I don't know if Wall Street is purposely running up the market to make the President look bad. Perhaps they are looking at the end of the rainbow - where the Repugs will take over again and they'll tend to the dismantling of Obamacare, Medicare, Medicaid and the privatization of Social Security. That is the pot of gold for Wall Street. In that case it is in their best interest to make the President look bad.
I just don't know how Repugs, the rich, the banksters, Wall Street and the Corporations can live with themselves and sleep at night. How can they continue to live off the backs of the downtrodden and the slowly dwindling middle class and not feel that they have some responsibility to pay their fair share? How can they continue to take and not give? How can they look themselves in the mirror and think that they are patriotic Americans?

I heard Bill Moyers talking about this once, and it makes sense. Many of the rich - especially the ones that hide behind religion - think that they are chosen, that the die is cast, that they are protected. I guess it's the same principle as how some see confession - you can be any sort of asshole, but then go into the magic box and all is forgiven. That's part of the greed group - the other part of it is something that I guess most of us here just can't fathom - a complete lack of empathy. Money is good, power is good, greed is good - and if I am good, screw everyone and everything else.
It really boggles the mind and defines the magnitude of the gap of polarization in this country.
And that doesn't even take into account the masses that support those that couldn't give a shit about them. That's a topic for another day...that also boggles the mind.

(1,798 posts)If you believe that, then any negative effects are just natural consequences, and nobody's fault.
In fact, you would then think that the suffering engendered is proper negative reinforcement for non-adaptive behavior. So, being a heartless bastard is just being "realistic". I think this is the only way to understand why people hurt by these policies support them - they think (i.e. have been convinced) that they are supporting the natural order of things.
I contend that we could best undermine this by using words like "unnatural", "perverse", etc. to describe those beliefs. It would have the added benefit that it's true that they are unnatural and perverse.
