Arizona sheriff plans to charge inmates for meals

"Everybody else has to pay for food, why should they [inmates] get freebies," said Arpaio.

Arpaio confirmed to ABC15 that beginning in March, he is planning to charge each inmate $1 per day for the cost of their meals.

Currently, there are roughly 8,300 inmates in the county jails and tents who receive two meals a day.

"You have to be a little innovative these days with budget problems and rising costs," Arpaio told ABC15.

The Sheriff said meals used to cost $.60 a day per inmate, but the cost of food has risen since the jail is now purchasing more food with donations down.

But what Arpaio feeds those inmates cost less then what his department spends on feeding K-9's!

And I'll bet that most of that money never gets past Arpaio's hands...

The jail was way too small to have it's own cooking area. Of course this was the town jail and not a big county lockup.

What a wonderfully compassionate conservative thing to do. We'll lock your ass up, throw away the key, and while you will make no money behind bars we'll charge you for meals. How does this fucker keep getting elected? Shouldn't he be on trial for extensive crimes related to racial profiling anyways?

He keeps getting re-elected because he uses illegals as the boogey man...I believe that most of the county supervisors are on his personal payroll, or he has them by the short and curlies for other reasons...the Feds stopped investigating him, which makes him look like a champion to his supporters!

He's good at scaring old white people into thinking that those brown savages from Mexico are coming to murder them in their sleep and gorge on their intestines...it also helps that there are a lot of bigots and racists in Arizona...Arpaio's kind of people!!!

Dec. 12, 2008

Maricopa County jail inmates will start paying for their own meals beginning in January under a policy Sheriff Joe Arpaio revealed Thursday afternoon.

for each day you can't afford to eat.

Makes perfectly good sense, doesn't it?

Seriously, I don't know what they would do, probably let you starve.

Must be lot of those in any county jail -- those who are arrested, then later released without ever being charged with anything. It hardly seems fair to force them to pay for their "accommodations" when they shouldn't have been in jail in the first place.
