I'm not really sure how to search for this so I'm hoping someone here can point me in the right direction...
Many many years ago a Catholic friend of mine told me that there are only 2 more Popes to go and then the end of the world comes. At the time I was an impressionable kid and it scared the crap out of me. If I'm not mistaken it was while John Paul II was the Pope, meaning that Benedict the XVI would be the next to last one so the next one coming up will be the final one.
I apologize if I'm being disrespectful to my Catholic brothers and sisters, but with the resignation of Pope Benedict XVI, I find myself wanting to read about it.
Do any of you know where I can find info about this online to read? Thanks in advance.

(4,243 posts)I understand what you are saying. I just find "end of the world" stories interesting to read. It doesn't mean I believe them.

(36,286 posts)I would interpret this prophecy as describing the end of the Papacy, not that of the Church nor the World.

(6,486 posts)Saint Malachy, an Irish archbishop in the 12th century, made the prophecies. A Benedictine monk first published them in 1595. There's a lot of skepticism about the whole thing, partly because they're pretty accurate up to 1590 and not so much so after that. Also, I think that the prophecy doesn't say anything about the end of the world, only about the last pope, who is called "Peter the Roman."

Cardinal Peter Erdo (Hungary)
Cardinal Tarcisio Pietro Bertone (Italy)
Cardinal Bertone was born in Romano, Italy. He is currently Cardinal Secretary of State and Camerlengo. He was previously Archbishop of Genoa, a fishing center. His coat of arms is very interesting. My money would be on him if the prophesy holds true.

The list ends with a pope identified as "Peter the Roman", whose pontificate will allegedly bring the destruction of the city of Rome and usher in the beginning of the Apocalypse."

(4,243 posts)I'm not at all worried about the end of the world. I just find reading about some of these end time prophecies interesting. When one fails another one will come along to take it's place. It seems like it's a never ending cycle.
I just happened to remember what my friend told me many years ago so I thought I would do some light reading about it.

(17,621 posts)That we had one back in the Dark Ages. Evidence is scant, and of course the Church denies it; but something awfully strange seems to have happened between Popes Leo IV and Benedict III in the 850s.
