(377 posts)for the others sorry i wasn't an english major i guess only those with a masterful approach to the English language should post eh. One more point to make my father was illiterate yet had so much more to say than so many of you. Oh and in your elitist concern about the use of dont you didn't even offer a constructive thought.
oldhippie
(3,249 posts)You don't have to be an English major, or apply a "masterful" approach to the language to use basic English grammar, spelling, punctuation and apostrophes.
If you want to come on a discussion board, which uses the written form of communication, and make some philosophical or political point, it is advantageous to use proper language. Otherwise, your message loses some focus and credibility. Sorry, but that is just the way it is. Maybe you should try some other form of communication.

not all are. My lack of an apostrophe now equates me with a right wing Tea bagger. Wow far stretch there. The under and uneducated need not apply right that is what you are saying.
It's "wrecking".
And I will so TOTALLY deserve it when you point out my next spelling or grammar mistake.
And I will try to learn from it.

(8,830 posts)to understand the basics, and you're poor-pitiful-me approach impresses very few. Your father, if he was indeed illiterate, had an excuse - though it is doubtful that he was posting on Internet discussion boards.
You, on the other hand, are not illiterate. You are lazy and full of yourself. Substantive comments require substantive posts. Your post was meaningless to anyone but you - why would most even attempt to respond to what you said. You up the ante by a no-doubt deliberate refusal to write coherently and then whine when you are called on it.
siligut
(12,272 posts)It is an idiosyncrasy here, partly because of the atrocious spelling and grammar of teabaggers.
Keep on posting, people will get used to it, there are other posters here who tend to ignore the rules as well.
I agree with your OP, starve the beast. I don't like giving them the positive attributes of an animal, so I am going to say, starve the pathogens.
Pathogens infect, debilitate and kill other living things.
siligut. your correlation with pathogens is so well used. I never thought about it from that angle. Kinda frightful when thinking of the destructive force of cancer.
siligut
(12,272 posts)For the selfish destruction it wreaks. Cancer can be caused by a virus, but it is our own cells gone awry.
A virus is a good analogy too, and some mutate so fast that they are difficult to combat, kind of like Mitt Romney's tax loopholes.

Blecht
(3,803 posts)oldhippie
(3,249 posts).... and so far it seems that your education is not up to the standard that allows others to understand what it is that you are trying to express. That is a problem when you are trying to express an opinion or a point on a written message board. So, yes, maybe it's not worth it. Try something else, maybe?
cant infer the point I was making maybe you should try thinking. I didn't realize I had to write a research paper to stroke peoples thinking.

(34,845 posts)Or insulting.
so repeated attacks about the misuse of an apostrophe and I come off as insulting. Funny that there wasn't one single addition to this post except to attack the lack of an apostrophe. I guess the undereducated need not apply. Again why do some people look at some as elitist?
randome
(34,845 posts)Or at the very least, abrasive. It's all good, though. We can always use someone new to either offer insights or provide new arguments.
As for what appears to be your main point, it's difficult to know what corporations are doing what to whom. I work for Nestle Purina at this point. They are an excellent corporation to work for. But they are also very large and some segments of the company do or say stupid things, such as when the CEO or whoever it was said that people don't have a 'right' to have water.
So it's not so easy to simply 'disown' a corporation that sometimes sounds stupid or even does stupid things.
Livluvgrow
(377 posts)Sure it is. Many in this country complain loudly about the current state of affairs, yet contribute to the very companies and executive class that are trying to destroy the lives of so many.
randome
(34,845 posts)Otherwise, the destructive corporations would all be gone. Most of us have busy lives and don't want to sift through the enormous maze of corporate malfeasence to figure out basic things like where to buy bread.
Sure, we could find the time. But most of us have families and full time jobs and other activities and so we pretend that there's nothing else we can do.
What can truly help matters, however, is better regulation of these corporate behemoths. It's Congress who allows things to get out of hand and it's Congress who can level the playing field.
I hope we're on the verge of more than a sea change with the continuing weakness of the GOP.
Livluvgrow
(377 posts)was the point of my whole thread. Many folks are too busy, but maybe if there were some friendly reminders about friendly companies to patronize than we could start to break a destructive corporate structure. We cant continue to weaken the GOP if we continue to feed their bank accounts. The rant by the CEO of subway is what started this thread. In light of his attitude I imagine many democrats will still stop at subway today. It doesn't matter that the Waltons will continue to use their wealth to destroy education, teachers by the tens of thousands will spend their money there today. Result, we gain nothing do to our own behavior.
randome
(34,845 posts)Can you point me to a link or summarize?
Livluvgrow
(377 posts)about how all the regulations under President Obama would make it impossible for him to open up subway today. He also spoke about how the ACA and minimum wage will destroy the bottom line of subway stores. Typical billionaire hogwash. I feel the only way we can fight these people is with our pocketbooks. Too many see the problems, but refuse to attempt a solution. We cant keep allowing our dollars to be used as a weapon against us. Our own spending habits are leading to our demise.

(34,845 posts)How many other CEOs have gotten involved with making public statements and then were forced to hang their heads in silence when the public excoriates them for it?
The Chick Fil-A CEO springs to mind. The Papa John's CEO is another.
Find their Facebook pages and add your disapproval to those that are no doubt already there. They usually end up looking foolish because shareholders don't want controversy.
And yes, it is typical billionaire hogwash but it's usually because they lead spectacularly unfulfilling lives and want to jump into a controversy to make themselves look relevant.
I call it Donald Trump Syndrome (DTS).

An "s" preceded by an apostrophe does not indicate the plural of anything. It's important, when you write something, to make sure it is clearly stated. If it is not, your message will be lost.

Livluvgrow
(377 posts)I was just trying to start a dialogue about corporate America and thought some inference could be made. I didn't think I had to explicitly spell it out. I agree about an apostrophe. If the above grammar police DONT like my post they should just move on instead of trying to show their supposed intellectual superiority.
99Forever
(14,524 posts)... like it or not, written language is the "coin of the realm" on forums such as this. There is nothing "elitist" nor is anyone acting with "supposed intellectual superiority" when they try to help you communicate yourself more effectively. If you choose to bask in ignorance and get defensive and angry over it, then you are merely hurting your own cause.
Livluvgrow
(377 posts)earlier. My father was illiterate. He was a sharecropper from Alabama. He had more profound thoughts than so many, yet lacked the ability to efficiently or properly convey them. With your viewpoint he wouldn't be welcome to post here.
99Forever
(14,524 posts)Would your father have been obstinate about learning something new and applying it to a new situation or would have made the conscious CHOICE to remain ignorant?
And by the way, were "your father" truly "illiterate" as you have stated repeatedly, posting here would have been impossible for him. You'll need to find another scapegoat for your misplaced anger.
Livluvgrow
(377 posts)but the truth in your world less educated or illiterate need not apply or post in this case.

I love the sort of wisdom some people have because they work with the living world.
BTW, your father would've been welcome here, it might have taken awhile, but people would eventually recognize the value of what he had to say.

(25,592 posts)Quite often you have no way of knowing anyway, of who own what.
Do you know where the food comes from in local grocery stores or restaurants? Do you know where local stores get their merchandise? Most likely 'no' in both cases. so, unless you grow your own food and weave your own cloth, to make your own robes (can't use sewing machines), you have no way of knowing who profits when you buy something.
