I was at a dinner party last night. The conversation ultimately got around to politics. One of the Repugs in the room said that he's voting for Romney because he's rich. When asked what that has to do with it - he said - well he's so rich he's not corruptible. He doesn't need lobbyist money. He doesn't have to kowtow to anyone. He can do as he pleases.
Is that how a lot of Repugs feel about Romney? I'm just curious as to how my fellow DU'ers react to that statement.

Mitt is scum.

(60,212 posts)He's already pals with all the people at the top, so they already have his ear.
Also, my counter to that is that Obama's not on the take. People don't become president to make money.

(2 posts)Romney went to France when he was 19 years old in 1966, as the Viet Nam war was heating up, to avoid the draft. He stayed in France 3 years and returned to the USA to get married when married men were exempted from the draft.
He is a draft dodger. His rich father paid his way and supported Mitt while in France.
The sons of the poor and middle class were drafted and 55,000 were killed, and many thousands more were maimed.
Now this corporate raider is buying votes so he can be president.
Did you ever wonder why this rich man will spend so much money on his campaign? He expects to "earn" more money from the Presidency.

(2,301 posts)People can be considered corrupt when they are given some money or favor to induce them to govern in a certain way, but the ultimate meaning of corruption is that they are governing in a way consistent to promoting their own short-term self-interest over other considerations (especially at the expense of the rights of others/etc).
We don't say dictators/kings aren't corrupt because they are already at the top of the power-pyramid (and hence can't gain anything). We say they are corrupt when rule in ways that violate human rights/economic freedom/etc that clearly benefit themselves.
I dunno, I'm not exactly a poli-sci expert, but that's my immediate take on it at least...

(7,875 posts)What in todays world equates to power more than money?
I seriously belive that for many -maybe even most- people in Romney's income bracket -and certainly the reptilian bastards who got there the way he did- the money is an addiction. They've got more than they and all their grandchildren could ever spend, and yet they are compelled to keep stockpiling more of it. The money is more important to them than anything they would ever buy with it. Romney has the disease. He is already corrupted. As President he will do everything in his power to make sure the fortunes of himself and his fellow 0.1%ers will increase.
