I looked and did not find a SS group. I'm very knowledgeable about SS and have read every trustees report since 2005. I am organizing a Social Security Defenders blogathon @ Daily Kos March 25-29, and would like to get a DU SSD group organized before then. That way both DU and DK can contribute and cross post.
Whats it going to take?

(13,211 posts)There are many people like me who specialize in particular subjects and are assets to our democratic communities, and they may or may not like a group to centralize data, links, news, socialize, outside of GD.
Links to geeky data generally dont do well in GD, and dont need to be cluttering up GD.

(57,936 posts)about precisely how it works and who would be affected by cuts. I would also like to know who would benefit from cuts.
In most middle class families, children would have to make up a decrease in Social Security benefits for their parents. Not having as much Social Security could mean that a parent could not afford gas for a car and would need to be driven everywhere. Who is going to do that? The kids.
Cuts in Social Security would mean that more parents had to move in with their children. Many of our homes are not large enough to accommodate a couple of teenagers, their parents and their grandparents.
I'm assuming that the most desperately poor seniors would still get what they are now receiving in Social Security benefits.
I would also like to know just exactly how Social Security, Medicaid and other benefits are calculated. What precisely is SSI? Who is eligible? How does that work?
And what about disability for people in their 50s?
So, yes. I think a special forum for Social Security "defense" if you will would be a good idea, but I would broaden the concept to make it a reliable resource for all of us. Maybe it would be good to have some posts with links to the government and other information about Social Security so that DUers can talk about facts and not just opinions.

(1,198 posts)We need (I in particular) to learn how to become activists to save Social security. I. Think we have a lot of work ahead to protect the benefits that were so hard won back in time.

(11,589 posts)if you are suggesting a group to discuss the finer points of Social Security (as you said the trustees report ) I would suggest going to Meta discussion and make a formal request. I have been under the impression that this is where discussions to lobby for new groups are supposed to happen.
I am kind of assuming you are looking for a place that is a sort of clearing house, as such -- if I'm right I think Meta is the place to make the request.

(15,801 posts)Especially with someone who is conversant with SS administration-speak. Heaven knows, there've been way too many times I've called SS with a question and gotten different answers from the people I've spoken to. It can be confusing! Let us know if you can get a group going. And thanks.

(7,672 posts)would be great for those of us approaching it, and in the current political climate where many politicos see it as a bargaining chip, it would be good to have solid detailed information.
