Bicycling produces more CO2 than driving, says Wash. GOP lawmaker (has since apologized)

Monday update: Orcutt has apologized: http://www.democraticunderground.com/10022460207
Original post follows:

[hr]
http://seattlebikeblog.com/2013/03/02/state-lawmaker-says-bicycling-is-not-good-for-the-environment-should-be-taxed/

Representative Ed Orcutt (R – Kalama) does not think bicycling is environmentally friendly because the activity causes cyclists to have “an increased heart rate and respiration.”

This is according to comments he made in an email to a constituent who questioned the wisdom of a new bike tax the legislature is considering as part of a large transportation package.

We spoke with Rep. Orcutt to confirm the email’s authenticity and to get further clarification.

“You would be giving off more CO2 if you are riding a bike than driving in a car,” he said. However, he said he had not “done any analysis” of the difference in CO2 from a person on a bike compared to the engine of a car (others have).

Email from Wash. rep. drawing ire from NW bike community
Source: KGW-TV

A Washington State Representative who serves as a ranking republican on the State Transportation Committee may be an unlikely proponent of a tax that would require everyone who buys a bike for more than $500 to pay a $25 fee.

His reason for supporting the tax, however, is raising some eyebrows in the Northwest biking community.

Rep. Ed Orcutt (R-Kalama) said in an email to bike shop owner Dale Carlson that, “since CO2 is deemed a greenhouse gas and a pollutant, bicyclists are actually polluting when they ride.”

Sun Mar 3, 2013, 03:36 AM
Mar 2013

than walking the same distance. It may be the least CO2 producing method of getting around (walking about 90 cal/mile while bike riding about 50 cal/mile).

Further it is about 1 kg CO2 per 2000 cal (this is probably an overestimate). A sedentary individual consumes about 1600 cal/24 hr.

A 25 mpg car generates 0.36 kg/mile from engine and 0.001kg/mile from occupant (40 mph and 25 mpg)
A 185# biker generates 0.025 kg/mile
A 185# walker generates 0.045 kg/mile

So in general cars produce more than 10 times CO2 than a bike for the same distance traveled. By the representatives reasoning you should take the total number of miles traveled by car in the state divide by the total miles traveled by bike in the state and multiply it by $250 and divide it among all the autos in the state.

Well, I don't think I'm particularly stupid, and when I read that I had to admit I had no idea whether it was true or not, but it wasn't implausible on its face. Some cocktail-napkin calculations told me a car emits as much CO2 in 2 miles as the average adult does in a normal day, but I still don't know how much carbon a trained athlete emits while exercising as opposed to a sedentary person sitting around. So I'd say I would now be very surprised if he were right, but he's not off by orders of magnitude or anything.

29. They're always trying to say CO2 is "pollution"
Sun Mar 3, 2013, 11:40 AM
Mar 2013

No, you meatheads, CO2 is a necessary compound for life. Life wouldn't exist without it.

It's about BALANCE. Consider the case with water. Not enough and you die of dehydration. Too much and you drown.

And right now we're saturating the planet with CO2, with disastrous consequences.

Sun Mar 3, 2013, 12:20 PM
Mar 2013

I mean... maybe he can.

Animals breathing form a closed loop with airborne oxygen and renewable food-derived carbon to make carbon dioxide.

Cars burning fuel form an open loop, turning carbon buried for 400 million years into new carbon dioxide.

In other works, burning oil adds NEW carbon to the atmosphere. Breathing recycles already-existing carbon.

He CAN'T be this unable to think... can he????

Even if it were true, the carbon being given off by the cyclist is carbon the cyclist took in from the environment, so there's no net increase of carbon in the atmosphere.

It's a stupid theory, but thanks to Tim Eyman, Washington's own Norquist clone, it's impossible to raise taxes for any reason. So they have to invent shit like this.

I expect a $5/rim tax on 23mm bike tires on the theory people with road bikes are using the public highways without paying their fair share...which will cause Michelin to bury the state in 20mm tires.

Sun Mar 3, 2013, 02:39 PM
Mar 2013

I frequently run into questions about climate change that you'd have to be a Saint not to think they were ... well ... stupid beyond belief.

My favorite question (which demonstrates why that "common sense" is not found in the scientific method) is this ...

"if CO2 is so harmful as a 'greenhouse' gas, then how do you get dry ice?"

(full disclosure - I grew up and live in Western Washington so this story is more than mildly painful to read)

So you'd have to be biking really, really hard to produce more carbon than a car. Then again, it's not exactly a different order of magnitude, either.

Yikes!

I have to say...this is a great sarcastic rebuttal to stupid Repuke talking points.

But I am uncomfortable with it, because it reinforces another Repuke talking point, that environmentalists are anti-humanity, and believe that humans should just kill themselves, as the best environmental solution.

Don't get me wrong...I don't lack a sense of humor, and this ad is a scream.

But, I don't agree that humans need to off ourselves in order to benefit the Earth. We just need to either stop breeding for awhile, or at least quit reproducing at such a high rate.

Great rebuttal to stupid idea that bicyclists cause more carbon pollution than car drivers.

Typical Repuke tendency to open mouth before engaging their brain.

Mon Mar 4, 2013, 04:12 AM
Mar 2013

it is unusable in our cells. We aren't creating CO2 we are simply returning the air to the atmosphere minus some of the oxygen.

I'm not scientist but that's my understanding of the process. We are not significantly adding to increased co2 levels. I suppose the ratio changes, but....

This is the stupidest thing ever. This asshole politician actually has me thinking about and defending breathing during exercise. Fuck him for wasting my time!

136. Not quite. We're releasing the carbon we took into our bodies by eating.
Mon Mar 4, 2013, 11:45 AM
Mar 2013

The carbon in the food we eat was originally absorbed from the atmosphere by growing plants. When we exhale we're simply releasing into the atmosphere what was taken out of the atmosphere by those plants, so there's no net increase in atmospheric carbon.

This is as opposed to fossil fuels, which contain carbon that's been buried in the earth for millions or billions of years. That carbon is a problem because it increases the amount of carbon in the atmosphere.

Mon Mar 4, 2013, 10:09 PM
Mar 2013

Precisely the same amount of carbon dioxide is returned to the atmosphere by all the processes of respiration and decay of plants and animals as is removed from the atmosphere due to the process of photosynthesis, provided only that none is lost in the form of new coal, oil, and other organic deposits.

The problem is with the combustion of fossil fuels, which results in the rapid release of massive quantities of carbon dioxide accumulated over millions of years. Breathing isn't the problem, genius.
