I'm popping in here on Sat. night because this entertaining story popped on Facebook

Guess what folks, some parts of the world don't have Facebook!
Parents and other forms of 'old dufus' in particular should know this.

World’s Most Embarrassing Mom Makes Peruvian Government Hunt Down Her Son When He Stops Posting on Facebook

Sometimes moms do cool things like drive you to the mall and let you borrow/keep forever $20. Mostly, though, they are embarrassing.

Take for instance, Garrett's mom.

In November, 25-year-old Garrett Hand and his 25-year-old girlfriend Jamie Neal flew from their California home to South America for a four-month bike trip. Before the couple left, they informed their friends and family that, for some of their trip (as they traveled through jungles and rainforests), they would be out of cellphone and Internet range.

In January, they passed out of cellphone range. In February, Garrett's mom demanded the Peruvian government launch a full-scale search ...

what if something happened to them? What if they were lost, injured, kidnapped, dead? Sounds like they went weeks without contact--you bet your ass I'd be worried.

I lived in the jungle in Peru, no roads, no phones, no newspapers, no shoes, no walls, no wires on poles everywhere, just snail mail once in a great while if you are in a town. Basically, no contact with the outside world in a vast region of jungle.

Especially if they're not being sponsored or led by some tour group or other organization, or don't have someone in the country who can contact folks back home on their behalf, or take a message in case there's a family emergency at home. I don't like it when my husband tries new mountain biking trails by himself in remote locations, in THIS country. People get lost or injured or need rescued while mountain climbing or hiking where I live, all the time. I don't care what other people do, or how they feel about their adult children going to foreign remote areas and basically disappearing for weeks at a time with no way to contact them--I can't fault this mom for panicking. She might have taken it to extremes, but I know where she's coming from.

I went without a phone or Internet for three years recently and I got a lot of things done and wasn't so stressed out all the time. I've actually been contemplating doing that again in the near future... I'll also not spend a lot of $$ I will not be having due to lack of employment.

even watching one T-V show to avoid the propaganda. It took my brain a while to learn to convert T-V to 3-D when I started watching again. And, T-V was so transparently about behavior control, and not just the ads!!!

I have refused to include a boobtube in my home since 1980 and I am glad to admit it when people start talking about the "programs" they enjoy and I don't have a clue what they're talking about. I must confess though that I do watch a grand total of four "programs" from the tube online... TRMS, The Ed Show, The Daily Show and the Colbert Report... on occasion I'll watch some of Melissa Harris-Perry because she's a polisci professor but that's where I draw the line. I do like Rachel Maddow and Melissa H-P because of their extensive political knowledge, I like Ed because he's a blue-collar kind of guy and the other two should be obvious. But I do all of that online, TeeVee in my rural area of MT is satellite or forget it and I won't pay all that for what little is of value. Don't miss it and even if I didn't have Internet, I wouldn't be missing a whole heck of a lot there either, I'd probably get more chores done on time!!

The mom needs to take a chill pill and let go of her son. My god!

The kids are out of range! How can she not understand that?

"...Their disappearance coincides with a US Embassy warning to foreign tourists near Cusco and the ancient Incan city of Machu Picchu of a potential kidnapping threat at the hands of Maoist Shining Path rebels."

I would have been concerned too. Glad they turned up ok.
