Did anyone watch "The Bible" on the History Channel the other night?

It drew record ratings for cable television. I am surprised I have not seen a thread about it here.

My take:

I am not a religious person. This program supposedly tells the story of the bible. I was shocked at how violent many of the stories were. For most of the night, the God of Christianity certainly was an angry god. There was lots of bloodshed. And women thus far have played minimal roles (at best) in any of the stories.

Millions of people watched the show. I am curious as to what others thought.

Did anyone believe it accurately told the story of the bible?
Was it too violent?
Was it demeaning?
Or was it a great story with wonderful special effects that accurately told the story of Christianity?

I'm just wondering what others on this board thought of the program.

The OT is not just the Christian bible, by the way.

There are some great non-religious reasons to read it: it contains good stories (Esther and Judith, two examples) and some translations are a pleasure to read just for the poetry.

Hollywood loved making Biblical epics because they could sneak more sex into the movie. After all, it was in the Bible.

A good explanation is provided in Caesar's Messiah: The Roman Conspiracy to Invent Jesus: Flavian Signature Edition.

If you read it, you won't look at the myth in the same way again.

I have noticed a lot of their shows are based on UFO's and Loch Ness monster stuff and not true history. And now we have this. Although I guess they have to go where the TV ratings are.

I like the Bible, and I particularly find the history of the Bible fascinating (not the history it describes, though that's interesting too; the history of the composition and editing of the Bible). What's really interesting to me is that in the "historical" period (Samuel, Judges, Kings, Chronicles), we have the same set of events described once from the perspective of the North Kingdom (Israel) and once from the perspective of the South Kingdom (Judah). Then we have the exile, and only the South Kingdom returns (the rest are the so-called "Lost Tribes&quot .

Anyways, it could have been a lot worse, but I was hoping for more.

I believe it is 10 part series. Part one began with a Noah's Arc intro. They then told the story of Abraham, the 3 Wise Men, and went up to Moses and Egypt.

I assume part 2/10 airs next week.
