San Francisco Bay Bridge Light Display Debuts (Live Event! 9pm PST)*UPDATED*

watch live: http://abclocal.go.com/kgo/livenow?id=9015594

For the first time in its 75 year history, the Bay Bridge was set to outshine its famous cousin the Golden Gate.

With a flip of a switch, or more accurately the launch of a computer algorithm, 25,000 white LED lights will burst to life on the vertical cables of the bridge.

Suddenly, the hulking, stoic gray steel structure will be overtaken with a seething mass of moving lights, shape-shifting into an infinite variety of patterns.

"What you're looking at is the biggest light show on this huge expansion of the Bay Bridge," said Carole Klyce, whose apartment overlooks the Bay Bridge. "There's nothing like it in the whole world."

The project was first envisioned by Ben Davis after an experience at the Burning Man arts festival. He wanted to find a way to mark the 75th anniversary of the Bay Bridge.

Love it.

However, I doubt that I will ever see it, as I never go into the city at night (I live in the North Bay).

I have her card, somewhere on my desk, but I cannot find it.

We held an awareness event on our property (I will PM you a link so the crazies don't see it). This is a very cool project and the planet needs more of like it.

Been watching the Doppler radar, and were going to get pounded soon with Rain. I think it will be nice to sit here (right now with my home made orange julius- vanilla ice cream and orange juice.) and watch it full on my flat screen monitor.

Just a hour to go ! Lets keep this bumped till 8:30!!

at least from the walkway as it bends around towards the Bay.

so, yes, I recommend the game a a stroll for the Bridge view at sunset, and with the lights, another trip to see them.

won't it be a distraction to motorists? I guess the lights are on the outside portion of the span, so they won't shine in the driver's faces...?

still, very neat to see the BB redone so nicely, after the quake of 89, it has been a long haul.

would not be able to see it really. You have to be at a distance, as the lights will be animated, probably showing different patterns and animation of a kind. I saw a short clip from it..its quite nice. Something different for the Bay Area.

SAN FRANCISCO — For decades the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge has been considered, when it is considered at all, as a headache for commuters and a place not to be in an earthquake.

But that reputation is set to change Tuesday night when the artist Leo Villareal will switch on what is being billed as the world’s largest L.E.D. light sculpture. The public art installation, “The Bay Lights,” will illuminate the bridge’s 1.8-mile western span with 25,000 undulating white lights.

“My inspiration comes from the motion around the bridge, the kinetic activity of boats, water, clouds, traffic,” Mr. Villareal said.

From a distance, it will appear as a shimmering illuminated mass, but Mr. Villareal controls each light individually with a software program he developed. He turns the whole thing on and off from his laptop.

Mr. Villareal’s ability to fuse technology into his art is particularly apt here in a city awash in new tech wealth and buzzing with the frenetic energy of start-ups and highly caffeinated computer programmers.
