Their obsession with "the gold ring" (the rich) pushed them to do anything - lying, intimidation, cheating and eventually even murder.

Yes, they want power, but they are beholden to, and do the bidding of, others. They serve the Dark Lord, in this case again, the rich, or 1%ers, even in their quest for the Ring. Sméagol/Gollum just wanted the Precious for itself.
