Valerie Harper, TV's Rhoda, diagnosed with terminal brain cancer

Actress Valerie Harper, best known to TV viewers for her memorable '70s role of Rhoda Morgenstern on "The Mary Tyler Moore Show" and later "Rhoda," has been diagnosed with terminal brain cancer.

People magazine revealed the news Wednesday morning.

"I don't think of dying," the 73-year-old told the magazine. "I think of being here now."

According to the publication, Harper underwent tests that revealed she has a condition known as leptomeningeal carcinomatosis, and has been told by doctors that she could have as little as three months to live.

"I've had a good run," she told People. "What more could I ask for?"

I heard her not very long ago and she seemed OK, it's another reminder that tomorrow is promised to no one.

From things I've read and seen we seem to be on the cusp of some tools that someday, hopefully soon, could hasten the end of cancer.

If our national priorities were better, if we invested in medical research at a fraction of the level we invest in tax breaks for zillionaires, the sinkhole that is the security state and perpetual war, we might have vanquished the big c already.

Her show was always a highlight of my Wednesday nights as a child. (Or was it Friday? Can't remember.)

Mary Tyler Moore seems like a nice person, but it was much easier for me to identify with Valerie and Cloris Leachman.
