Georgia city ordinance would require a gun in every home

A small town in Georgia has proposed an ordinance that would require “the head of household” in every home to own a gun and ammunition.

Town leaders in Nelson on Tuesday told WSB-TV that they had drafted the ordinance because they only have one police officer on duty for eight hours a day. And they worry that sheriff deputies cannot provide enough protection during the 16 hours each night that no officer is patrolling.

“When he’s not here we rely on county sheriffs–however it takes a while for them to get here,” Nelson City Councilman Duane Cronic, who drafted the proposal, explained.

Cronic’s ordinance reads: “In order to provide for the emergency management of the city, and further in order to provide for and protect the safety, security and general welfare of the city and its inhabitants, every head of household residing in city limits is required to maintain a firearm, together with ammunition.”

You would need to arm the children and the dog.

That's prime hillbilly country. I was born and reared about 40 miles north of there. Everyone has guns, and (usually) lots of them.

"Anyone with a “physical or mental disability,” felons, “paupers” and those “who conscientiously oppose maintaining firearms as a result of beliefs or religious doctrine” could be exempted from the rules."

So if a Christian Coalition neo-falwellite dominionist is consistent in their anti-ACA view that lawmakers have no Bible-based authority, pace David Barton, to enforce an individual mandate they're covered. Nice to know

seriously hurt because everyone knows there are guns in the house. They break in steal gun and use it, on the resident or someone else. Who's responsible? What if someone has the gun and they have a relative who is unstable, over for a visit and this unstable person has a break down? I can see all kinds of bad scenarios coming from this "Law". Not to mention all those who will shoot first ask questions later when they hear a bump in the night.

I don't know about there, but her here, where I live, every time a millage comes to a vote to pay for police, fire or our crumbling schools, the right wing morons always vote it down and then complain because of class sizes for their kids or the lack of police protection.

I currently do not own a gun, but if 'the law is the law' I'd be OK with it with a few provisions......

1) The city will provide me with the gun of my choice or said expense will be deducted from my property taxes.
2) I am reimbursed for ammunition or the cost of such is deducted from my property taxes.
3) I am provided with a gun safety course free of cost. This does not mean Bubba out behind the 'Do Drop In'.
4) I am provide an advanced course on my weapon of choice. This does not mean Bubba out behind the 'Do Drop In'.
5) The city will provide free of cost, practice facilitys. This does not mean out behind the 'Do Drop In'.
6) I and every one else is re-certified on a regular basis free of cost. This does not mean Bubba out behind the 'Do Drop In'.

If the local municipality thinks that they can afford that, then I would be the first to vote yes on an ordinance requiring me to own a new Dodge Charger.

though it is rarely enforced. I lived there with my son and his wife for a few years before I moved next door to Woodstock, GA, which does not have such a law. My son had a gun. But if I were required to have a gun, I would request that the town buy it for me because I could not afford it.
