Taylor Swift, Nonfeminist, Should Ease Up on Feminist Superstar Amy Poehler

The Golden Globes are long over, but at least one member of the audience is still holding a grudge. Taylor Swift, whose career is rooted in done-me-wrongism to a degree impressive even for a country star, was apparently displeased at a mild joke hosts Tina Fey and Amy Poehler made at her expense. She told Vanity Fair, “You know, Katie Couric is one of my favorite people, because she said to me she had heard a quote that she loved, that said, ‘There’s a special place in hell for women who don’t help other women.' " Poehler responded in what seems to be typically good humor: "I feel bad if she [Swift] was upset. I am a feminist, and she is a young and talented girl. That being said, I do agree I am going to hell. But for other reasons. Mostly boring tax stuff."

While this may seem to be just another minor celebrity kerfuffle, or part of the catfight narrative that the media so often projects onto famous women, it raises interesting questions about what happens when women who explicitly declaim the feminist label, as Swift does, try to invoke feminism as a protective rite when it becomes convenient to them. If Swift thinks women should support each other, what does that look like? Does it mean never (ever, ever) criticizing other women?

Poehler could easily pull rank on Swift. In her day job playing Leslie Knope on Parks and Recreation, she's a pop cultural role model for civic-minded women—and her character even mentors Aubrey Plaza's dour April. In Bossypants, Tina Fey remembers Poehler standing up against the assumption that she was on Saturday Night Live to be adorable: "She wasn't there to play wives or girlfriends in the boys' scenes. She was there to do what she wanted to do." Poehler also runs a YouTube show, "Smart Girls At The Party," highlighting the intelligence and inventiveness of her young female guests. When she's not on-set, she's cutting ads for the National Domestic Workers Alliance or participating in the Draw The Line campaign to defend abortion rights. For all that Hollywood's a largely liberal industry, the choice to speak out, particularly on women's issues, isn't always a clear one for stars who want to avoid alienating conservative fans.

<snip<

It's unfortunate that Swift was upset by the Golden Globes. But if she really wants to champion female solidarity, she might want to think a bit more carefully about what that means. It's bad form—and really, bad manners—for Swift to slam her romantic rivals, remain silent on women's issues to protect her brand, and then decide that Fey and Poehler's conduct is really what's sending someone to feminist hell.

...Combine that attitude with a net worth of about $165 million, and you have someone who thinks they can say and do nothing wrong.

Right now, she's a jerk...maybe she'll grow out of it, but I doubt it.

In addition, you want to be a huge celebrity, you take the inconveniences that come with your great good fortune without whining. The jokes were mild. Her reaction was petulant and nasty, And for her to throw feminism in Amy's face is blatantly hypocritical.

stop trying to drag us Gen X'ers into their stupid axe grindings.

Yeah, that's "a joke", too. Yes. I know that Poehler and Fey are in their 40s.

It is funny that "it's just a joke" is AN ABSOLUTELY UNACCEPTABLE RESPONSE TO OUTRAGE WHICH MUST ALWAYS EACH AND EVERY DAMN TIME BE TAKEN SERIOUSLY BECAUSE SOMEONE GOT OUTRAGED AND AS SUCH THEIR OUTRAGE MUST BE RESPECTED AND TAKEN SERIOUSLY...

at least, until it is.

not very good at it.

Like was posted upthread, Pohler and Fey shouldn't be surprised if Swift responds to being made fun of. But a lame response like Swift's only makes her look worse, so she should consult an expert to see what if any public response to the slight should be. Or maybe she should just drop the gloves completely and call them ugly and accuse them of having cankles .

A comedienne makes fun of people, but everyone understands that is their job. Hell, if the folks at SNL do not make jokes about you, you are a "has-been" in Hollywood. Simply put, if Fey and Poehler are NOT making jokes about you, you need to hire a new agent to beg them to. If Swift does not know this, which I doubt (reasons explained in next paragraph) then she needs to learn it, FAST.

As far as swift, she has made a career out of insulting people, and NOT in a funny way. Yes, singers write about bad relationships, but when it gets hard to find a hit single that is NOT in line with the tabloids about your life, you can get called into question. This woman is only 25, and she has been through more celebrity romances than some 40 year olds. She makes a point of insulting people in a way that, to make a pun that makes a point "never never, ever, ever, like EV-ER!" has a hint of anything but arrogant malice and narcissism.
All this is done while she has pretense of being some important artist, while making damned sure her blonde, blue eyed fashion plate status is focused on.

No she does not to the blatant porn sex like Madonna did, but she is just the new version of an old formula; be an narcissist pretentious twit, and all the narcissist twits will beat a path to your door.

She holds a boyfriend for a few months, breaks up with them, writes a song badmouthing them.

Pure fraud. She fits in perfectly with the Nashville establishment.
