Steel yourselves, animal lovers. A few weeks ago, we told you that the National Institute of Health recommended that a majority of government-owned lab chimps be retired in the near future.
For 111 of these chimps, the largest group ever to be retired, this dream is now a reality. Over the next 12 to 15 months, lab chimps from across the country will be set free and will live out their days at Chimp Haven, a sanctuary in Keithville, Louisiana.
The process has already started, and it is pure magic. Below, a few chimps see the sky and feel the grass for the first time in their lives.

(3,145 posts)a good solution is if people serving life terms( convicted w/o a doubt of their guilt) would volunteer for medical research in return they get better living quarters, food, exercise, amenities such as movies etc.
Weed through the violent ones and pick out people who want to give something back in lieu of what they have taken from someone else.
It's workable as long as it stays on a volunteer base and not like China.

but it was horrible to put them through the torture of testing. Bless all of their hearts and the many who died with out seeing the sky and feeling the earth beneath their feet.

(38,613 posts)I think it's disgusting that some of these chimps have been in cages for 50 fucking years. OMG. What is wrong with us (humans)? So happy to see them free. And I think it's because I'm 53 and I can't imagine being locked up for all but 3 yrs of my life. I'm going to go have a good cry for them.

(10,942 posts)more advanced, the need for animal test subjects have become less needed.
I take a nuanced view on this issue. Using chimps as test subjects saved human lives over a number of years and led to medical advances that have made human life easier. But no chimp should be held for testing for up to fifty years. Human beings that have benefited from medical advances that researches using chimps for testing perfected should be thankful for the chimps that are alive and are being released, and the chimps that didn't survive.

(272 posts)It made me angry that these intelligent animals were used as objects and given not a shred of respect. I have type 1 diabetes, which is only able to be controlled because of animal experiments (dogs) conducted nearly a century ago, and I hereby announce that those experiments should never have been done. There is no excuse for cruelty. I'm so glad the chimps are able to spend what remaining time they have in a more natural setting, though.

(899 posts)It's just loathsome what humans can do to other living beings. I watch Chimp Eden on the animal planet and am so impressed with the work they do -- just awesome how they relate as a group.

(42,290 posts)You could tell that they were very old, some of them over 50 years.
It's like they were in prison all their lives and are now tasting freedom.
