That's nothing new on SNL, but this one disturbed me.
The death of a President of a "neighbor" nation, as Jesse Jackson named it, is too fresh, and many are still hurting over his death.

(2,515 posts)Oh, the old line, SNL was never as good as its original cast.
Yea yea.
You know who thinks that?
People who were aged 18-28 when it originally aired.
Same crowd who cursed disco only to see rock fade away to nothing while dance music has taken over.

(2,124 posts)I liked the era of eddie murphy, billy christal, joe pispico, martin short.
For me around 82-88 I loved the show.
I think around the late 90s it also had some great times. the election coverage of 2000 was priceless.

(37,573 posts)and 90% of it was dreck. It seems to me I watched about an hour to see maybe one or two really funny skits. And then it got worse. For a time there it seemed like they thought "every skit should be a TV show". I mean the Church Lady used to be scenes from a church and stuff, but then she got her own TV show "Church chat". Then too, they would do spoofs of, say "Regis and Kathy" which might have been hilarious if I had actually watched Regis and had the first clue who he was, but since I didn't they just seemed really, really stupid.

(7,596 posts)According to an AP article, the Chavez skit ridiculed him for once calling George W. Bush "The Devil". Ha ha ha.
If you're going to attack the man, at least do it for legitimate reasons. Not because he once insulted a war criminal responsible for the deaths of thousands of Americans and Iraqis. Lame, SNL.

BlueStater
(7,596 posts)The most in-depth you've gotten about it is "Seriously?". Yes, seriously, I want to know.
Calling Bush "the devil" is no different than when we, as Americans, refer to foreign mass murderers like Osama bin Laden as "monsters". For Bush, who has killed thousands in his pointless wars, being called a devil is something he deserves. His actions as president were infamous enough to more than warrant it.

BlueStater
(7,596 posts)Not using Chavez calling George W. Bush the devil as one of the reasons he was insane. A lot of people in the world would agree with him on that so take your worthless political opinions and shove them where the sun don't shine, SNL writers.

(7,596 posts)Go back to 2003, SNL writers, when treating the Chimp's detractors as lunatics was actually trendy. You're ten years too late.
Chavez may very well have been insane but it definitely wasn't because he hated Bush and I highly resent that implication, as we all should.
cynatnite
(31,011 posts)No one was getting their underwear in a bunch when they did the Djesus Unchained skit.
Just seems to me that some folks' sense of humor stops if their fav political leader is the one who is the punch line of a joke.
It's just a skit, for crying out loud. Use your energy to get outraged by something worthwhile.
BlueStater
(7,596 posts)I don't care if they made fun of Chavez. This has nothing to do with him, really. What I care about is that they implied he was crazy because he demonized Bush. That's bullshit and SNL doesn't deserve a free pass on this just because it's a comedy show. The years (mostly 2002-2003) when the media would portray Bush critics as insane and out-of-touch are still fresh in my mind and I'm sensitive over this.
Newsflash, SNL: it's not 2003 anymore and Bush isn't some well-loved president. He's one of the most despised ever and left office with a 22% approval rating. When you imply anyone who calls him an inflammatory name like "devil" or "war criminal" or whatever is crazy, YOU'RE the ones who are out of touch. Say whatever you want about Hugo Chavez. You can make fun of him because of what he said about Mars but no one faults him for anything bad he said about that moronic war criminal.
And I don't normally watch SNL so I never even heard of the skit you're talking about.

and I must also add that I don't hate Chavez. I don't like him either- I think he did more harm than good and I HATE the things he has said about Obama the past few years. I realize he tried to help the poor- so there is a mixed bag from my perspective.
My point is that don't you have any critiques of this man's rule? Isn't there even one thing that you didn't like? Is the support 100%?
ronnie624
(5,764 posts)I would at least cite some facts and post a link or two to information supporting my claim.
It isn't my place to critique the government of Venezuela, as long as it isn't violating international law as well as its own constitution, like the US does on a regular basis. Such critiques are strictly the business of the Venezuelan people. What I support more than anything else, is a peoples' sovereign right to determine their own political and economic destiny, without interference from international predators, seeking to control resources.

It seems to me you lived your life like a candle in the wind, if a candle could pull out two pistols at a press conference. You said the U.S. caused earthquakes and you outlawed Coke Zero. And on your shoulder stood your parrot with a matching red beret. You had your own TV show, it was called Hello President, it wasnt about politics, you sometimes danced stand made up raps.
You helped to make a country the kidnapping capital of the world, which also increased milk production by almost 50 percent. And it seems me like you once gave a speech where you encouraged shorter showers, and another thing you said was capitalism killed Mars. (He actually said that...) You were hero to your people and you never gave up a fight. We'll Miss you Hugo Chavez, because Live from New York, it's Saturday Night!"
