Ohio Retiree Decides To Try Jail Instead Of Fine
CINCINNATI - A 71-year-old retired teacher decided to learn about jail life firsthand.
He didn't think it was too bad; in fact, he says he "had a good time."
The Cincinnati Enquirer reports that Obie Cargile has been checking off items on his "bucket list," visiting museums, natural landmarks, roller skating and running marathons. When he was cited for improper brake lights, he decided to try something else new.
Rather than pay a $160 fine he considered unfair, he said he would take three days in jail. He says now that it was worth it.
He says he shared a tiny cell, but had a clean cot to sleep on and was treated with respect by fellow inmates.

(10,749 posts)How an improper brake light can result in a jail sentence is beyond me, but think about this.
Instead of getting $160 from him, he cost the system probably $300 or more for the 3-night stay. This is stupid.

When I got hauled into the station, they wanted a hundred bucks bail, and I had 10 bucks on me. They gave me a phone to call someone for the bail money, and I called a few people I new wouldn't have it handy. I asked what the jail served for breakfast and they got a little squirmy and ended up letting me go.
Later, I found out that court was on Wednesday and the local judge often made the offer of a hundred bucks or 10 days. Take the 10 days, because they let you out on Friday to save the overtime for weekend jail guards.
The risk was that they might have an actual felon in there over the weekend and either have to bring a guard in or send you both to County.

(7,412 posts)They charge $22 a day to stay in jail in this county, then if you get probation you pay $60 every visit to the PO, cash only.

(21,925 posts)Do they increase your jail time and charge you additional fees, penalties, and interest for that? That could get very expensive and very long.
