Stray dog saves 2 British soldiers from bomb, up for Crufts award
Hailsham - A nearly starved stray dog has a new home and is a finalist for an award at the prestigious Crufts Dog Show after saving two British soldiers stationed in Afghanistan from hidden bombs.
Brin, a four-year-old Afghan Kuchi Tiger Mix, was adopted by a British Coldstream Guards unit after they found him abandoned and starving along a roadway near an abandoned base in the Helmand Province of Afghanistan in 2010. After finding Brin and continuing on patrol, Brin began barking, alerting two soldiers to a Improvised Explosive Device (IED) buried in the desert. Realizing he had a special talent, the unit began taking Brin on patrols.
Not long after saving the soldiers, Brin was captured by Taliban insurgents during a raid. He remained with his captors for about two weeks until he was found by Afghan Special Forces. However, the British unit was schedule to return home, meaning Brin would have to be euthanized.
The unit mounted a campaign through Nowzad Dogs Charity, a rescue organization dedicated to saving abandoned animals in Afghanistan and Iraq. It was during that campaign 51-year-old school teacher, Sally Baldwin, learned of Brin. She told the Sussez Express:
"Brin has been through so much but this never stopped him being loyal, loving and brave. Despite being left starving and abandoned, he found new humans to love and saved the soldiers.""

(34,437 posts)Iraq & Afghanistan. They think it's because of the excruciatingly long tours of duty troops have been forced to endure. I've been donating to Operation Baghdad Pups through SPCA International since 2008 and they have saved almost 500 cats & dogs from Iraq & Afghanistan by bringing them to the US.
Here's a book that tells the story of some of the animals and the troops that love them:
