I'm just not up for an 18 month election season
Who the hell wants to go through that?

(11,464 posts)the other party is already in 2016, let alone 2014 mode.
The days of that are long over, (like the fabled(though not real) politics is a gentleman's game
These days one has to stake their turf, so they cut off the money supply for anyone not as good or even similiar.
(Much like Hillary going for the clinch now, everytime she is talked about no one in the party who is serious will run, but the others will make noise in case she wouldn't run.
Election runs are now multi-million dollar things, so all has to be in place.
And in Ashley Judd's state, it means Mitch has to keep his eye on the election, and not on his job, so it mght lead to him making major mistakes but ones better for the rest of the country.

The main job of a politician is to keep his job

(31,706 posts)...a lot of what she's doing is sending out "feelers" to see if people will be willing to donate to her campaign. My bets are to take on Turtleman next year she'll need at last 10 to 15 million dollars. Even as successful a star as she's been, I doubt she has that type of money lying around. Also she needs to put an organization in place as there's a good chance she'll face a challenge in next year's primary (so we're talking 12 months not 18)...thus there's a narrow window, especially for an outisder like Judd will be, to establish a well funded, credible campaign. Welcome to the age of Citizens United...

(31,706 posts)...I'd borrow one thing from the British...a limited campaign season. Prevent any campaign fundraising to 6 months before a primary and political advertising for only 90 days before an election. Give us a little respite from the non-stop campaign season. Sadly I doubt such a law would withstand a court challenge...especially the current SCOTUS.
Yep...the rushpublicans PACS are still loaded with folding green and we're getting a preview of how noisy and cut-throat they'll be next year...
