Joe Lieberman Joining Conservative Think Tank

Joe Lieberman, who left the Senate in January after a career that saw him go from Democratic vice presidential nominee in 2000 to an apostate viewed by many in the party as a traitor, will join the American Enterprise Institute (AEI), the conservative think tank announced Monday.

Lieberman will serve as co-chair of AEI's "American Internationalism Project," which will seek to "renew the foundations of American internationalism and the commitment to political and economic freedom that has been the hallmark of U.S. leadership for more than half a century," according to a press release.

The Democrat-turned-independent from Connecticut will lead the project with former Sen. Jon Kyl (R-AZ), whose career in the Senate also drew to a close in January. In the press release, Lieberman said he's hopeful that the project will help forge foreign policy consensus between Democrats and Republicans. He added that he's "grateful" to AEI for spearheading the project.

"There is an urgent need to rebuild a bipartisan -- indeed non-political -- consensus for American diplomatic, economic, and military leadership in the world," Lieberman said in the release. "That's why I am grateful to AEI for initiating and sponsoring this project and why I look forward to leading it with my friend Jon Kyl."

78. Though Lieberman was a "rock star" in the Palm Beach are, being a Jew was NOT why he was picked
Tue Mar 12, 2013, 07:18 PM
Mar 2013

1) Even without a Jew on the ticket, Democrats would have gotten over 75% of the Jewish vote AND they always have a very high rate of voting. In 2000, it likely would have been more so as GHWB was NOT liked by the minority of Jews voting because of Israel.

2) There were some stories that he was picked because being the first Jew on a ticket would have created some excitement for a candidate that the media designated as "boring".

3) The far more common reason given was that Joe Lieberman, one of the first Democrats to blast Clinton about Monica was the media designated "anti- Clinton". (The media was far happier with JL than one likely alternative - who likely would have led to a Gore victory - John Kerry. Consider Gore would have won with NH which he lost narrowly and where JK was liked and Kerry debating Cheney would NOT have ended with the man unwilling to condemn apartheid and against free lunches for poor school kids looking like a kindly grandfather. Kerry has mentioned with pride very often that Teresa marched against apartheid in South Africa and has spoken like the social justice Catholic he is on caring for the poor. )

Gore seemed to choose Lieberman to get a clean start and separate himself from Clinton's immorality. Yet, his own Eagle scout, married to his high school sweetheart with 4 lovely children should - by itself - have done that without the need to say a word.

The Repub was way worse (By 2001 Mayor Giordano from Waterbury went to jail, as a sex offender). And I guess I voted for him again as I was not voting for Bush or for Nader to help Bush win. I was not voting in primaries back then as I was only in my early 20's. I really wish I had. By 2006, I voted for Lamont in the primary and then in the general election. Unfortunately, lots of people in CT had loyalty to Lieberman. I apologize for that idiot. Ashamed he is from my state and wish he would just leave.

What a couple of bookends you and Zell Miller made.

For those who do not recall, Zell was from Georgia, southern version of the pair.

Zell Miller (D) Georgia Support for Republicans

Throughout Zell Miller's career as a U.S. Senator he showed increasing support for Republicans and increasing criticism of Democrats, leading some[who?] to question whether his fellow Democrats in the Senate had given him a lukewarm reception. However, given his beginnings as a conservative southern Democrat, it is likely he found his views drastically different from the more liberal ideology of the national party.[citation needed]

Although nominally a member of the Democratic Party, Miller has endorsed Republicans since at least 2004. He backed Republican President George W. Bush over Democratic nominee John Kerry in the 2004 presidential election and since 2003 has frequently criticized the Democratic Party, and has publicly supported several Republican candidates. In 2006, Miller did voice-overs (narrations) for Republican candidate commercials in Georgia state elections (George "Sonny" Perdue and Ralph Reed).
He declared early in 2008 that he would not support either Senator Barack Obama or Senator Hillary Clinton in the presidential election. He supported Senator John McCain instead. After Obama was elected President and Democrats increased their majorities in the House and Senate, he endorsed Republican Saxby Chambliss in the Senate run-off against Democrat Jim Martin and criticized Obama over "spreading the wealth".[24]
In 2012, Miller served as the national co-chair to the campaign of Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich.[25] The same year, Miller endorsed Doug Collins, the Republican candidate in the 9th District of Georgia congressional race.[22]
