In an interview with Denver Post published Monday, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) said that the federal government should respect laws like the one passed by Colorado last year that legalizes marijuana for recreational use.
"The state (Colorado) has spoken. The law has been passed," Pelosi said. "There are issues with taxation and regulation, and we need to get on with it."
The former House Speaker said she supports the leadership of Rep. Jared Polis (D-CO), the Colorado congressman who's one of the most outspoken proponents of legalization on Capitol Hill. Pelosi said states that have legalized marijuana for recreational or medical use must be respected, adding that Colorado and the federal government should resolve any "taxation issues" that may arise from the new pot law.
"And in order to do that, there has to be a level of respect for the fact that if you are going to have recreational marijuana somebody is in business to do that and they have to have tax treatment in order for them to function as a busines," Pelosi said. "So how the state of Colorado interacts with the federal government on the taxation issues is something they have to work out, but I think they should."

(1,372 posts)They always look at the tip of the problem instead of going for the root cause.
Maybe because they get to fight every little battle over and over again and the lawyers
rake in all the bucks, but....
They need to decide how, when they have a Federal law and the states start to legalize
or go against the Federal law, how do things get transitioned.
As example: They could say that if 5 states agree that they want to go against a Federal law
(abortion, MJ legalization, schools, gambling casinos, etc.) the 5 states get together and apply
for a hold on the Federal law so the Feds can't send in their goon squads and mess with the
states. This allows for a period of time where the states can figure out their rules and regs.
taxes, etc. If all works out without problems then the Federal law becomes void and other
states can enter the ring.
This thing where states (the people of those states) vote to legalize something within that state
and then the Feds come in and screw with the states and the people. The Federal laws are supposed to deal with interstate commerce anyway - not with what goes on within the state.
Let's just come to a decision and get on with things!
