Mayor Jim Suttle will pledge to support a local ban on assault weapons and limits on high-capacity magazines in a campaign commercial set for release today.

The advertisement shows footage of a school hallway, movie theater and shopping mall. Suttle's voice joins a meter imposed on the screen and counts the days since mass shootings in Newtown, Conn., Aurora, Colo., and Omaha's Von Maur department store.

“And Washington still hasn't banned assault weapons,” Suttle says in the 30-second spot. “As mayor, I'm tired of waiting for Washington. I'm the only candidate who would ban assault weapons in Omaha and limit high-capacity magazines ... Send a message that this can never happen again.”

While the ad proposes a local ban, Suttle's campaign has yet to offer specifics about the mayor's plan. Suttle's campaign says the mayor will examine what could be enacted in accordance with state law.
