As a former Cathlolic...

I'd like to say I hope we get a decent Pope. We're not gonna get Kucinich as Pope, as much as we were never going to get Kucinich as President.

But the institution can change. But it will always change slowly. So I hope we see some movement in a more modern direction.

And if we don't? Well, I haven't been Catholic in a long time, so it doesn't matter to me, but it does matter to millions of others. I hope for the best.

Think of the lives that could be saved if the church changed its stance on birth control alone. Or any other 19th century view it holds.

Besides the obvious, it would also greatly help women's rights in many countries around the world.

we have a priest in the family. The pedophile scandal and how the church wormed money out of the parishioners has caused them great harm. The Cardinals appeals etc...money went to pay off the lawsuits. Locally the church keeps closing schools, its because they used up all there money on the lawsuits. Its going to take a progressive leader to come up with a way to undo the harm done. Whomever it is should no be from Rome or Europe.
