He's a typical republican slime ball who only looks out for himself. Now that he has discovered his child is gay NOW it's ok. Well that doesn't fly with me. It was his ilk that pushed this nasty change to the Ohio constitution.....
"According to the Ohio Constitution, only a union between one man and one woman is recognized as a valid marriage by the state and its political subdivisions. The Ohio Constitution also says that neither the state nor any political subdivision may create or recognize a legal status for relationships of unmarried individuals that intends to approximate the design, qualities, significance or effect of marriage.
In addition, Ohio law says that any marriage between persons of the same sex is against the strong public policy of the state, has no legal force or effect, is void ab initio (null from the beginning) and will not be recognized. "

(2,140 posts)Of course not....His ilk can only bring themselves to do the right things, when it's either politically expedient or it hits home....Doing right things on principle or moral grounds never occur to them...

(24,416 posts)but you're probably right. Of course, I believe he's up for re-election next year. Wonder if this will get him primaried and if so, will he fight for his son or kowtow to the fundie baggers? It will be interesting to see.

(5,901 posts)Portman's son came out to him in 2011, but he kept quiet all through 2012 because he was on the short list for VP, and then up for a big cabinet post if Romney won. So, after losing out on his hopes and dreams, he announces that he stands with his son. Too little, too late for any accolades. While I'm happy that he's supportive now, no high praise for him, please. He's another self-serving Reep.

(12,189 posts)Portman's son came out to him in 2011, but he kept quiet all through 2012- but now that the tide seems to be turning with young repubs and the election of 2012 is past NOW he's ok with it. Sorry no pass for this prick, people like him have cast us in Ohio as second class citizens UNTIL it hits home and now he's sorry? fuck him he deserves nothing from me.)

(297,349 posts)More recently-- last June-- he voted to keep a GOP filibuster going against confirming Mari Carmen Aponte as Ambassador to El Salvador. Ms. Carmen isn't a lesbian but right-wing sociopath Jim DeMint claimed an article she once wrote was pro-gay and that that disqualified her from being Ambassador. Portman went along with DeMint, although 7 other Republicans crossed the aisle, shut down DeMint's insane filibuster (62-37 and subsequently confirmed her. Even cowering closet case Lindsey Graham voted to shut down the filibuster. So did die-hard homophobe Marco Rubio. Portman has a zero rating by ProgressivePunch on his voting record on roll calls crucial to the LGBT community.
Finally now a strike of conscience?
