When people ask me what I'm interested in, or what I like to read, I always say "science and politics" but that description doesn't work for me.
"Politics" to me is Senate rules and elections and competing for a seat on a committee. I don't consider that an interest or a reading topic. I have an interest in those things, but not much.
I just finished reading "No Impact Man", preceded by "Walking Away from Empire". They didn't feel like politics.
What about writers like Jared Diamond, Naomi Klein, James Loewen, or Barbara Ehrenreich? Their writings may mention politicians, but they are not about politics.
I like science and...?
I don't have a word. I wish I had one

I like science and being frustrated by the general lack of discourse and society's total lack of self awareness?

(25,936 posts)I realize that most people don't toss the word around much after Civics class in middle school, but it implies active citizen participation in everything from domestic affairs to matters of state. It even has a positive connotation, i.e., 'civic duty.' I agree that 'politics' falls short in describing the level of interest and participation exercised by people I admire. 'Politics?' It implies smoke-filled rooms, bag men & half-assed compromises.

(9,999 posts)that word never sat right with me. Politics to me is back rooms with the ends justify the means kind of dirty deals. I decided to change my words to Current Events. That emcompasses all that grabs my attention. A better fit for me.
