We need to wake the nation from its determined slumber so that we can eradicate rape culture.

Rape happens far, far more often in some places, and in some cultures, than in others.

Recognising that fact, and looking for common denominators between groups which commit relatively high (and for the love of god do not forget that word "relatively" - there is practically no demographic where the fraction of rapists is not tiny as a fraction of the total populace) numbers of rapes per capita, and between groups which commit very few, and trying to affect local cultural change based on that, is probably one of the best ways to go about reducing the incidence of rape ("Getting rid of rape" is not a serious goal, sadly; all we can hope is that it will become rarer, preferably much rarer).

I guess that one large part of that is "attitudes to masculinity, and to what makes a man worthy or unworthy of respect", but I'm a mathematician and not a sociologist.

so there really is no way to talk about this in terms of hard numbers. It would be difficult to do such a comparison.

Sexual assault is a huge problem in America. Few women have not experienced some form of it, if not rape. Take a poll of the women you know & you'll see. Huge problem. By the time most women wise up they are emerging from the most vulnerable age group and it becomes less of an issue in ordinary social relationships. But they ALL have been exposed to it. Friends, relatives, strangers --most women develop the antenna for who has the profile & learn to avoid the type--unless they have bad self esteem issues. Many learn the hard way. Young men need to be educated in no uncertain terms. Maybe Steubenville will help some of them get the picture.

If you don't look at it you can't do anything about it. We need much more discussion & education at teenage level.

...And for every event that people hear about, there are thousands upon thousands that America does not hear about. Big cities, small towns, deserted prairies, places foreign and domestic, the weak are raped by the strong. Thus it is, thus it has been, and you don’t f***ing want to know, do you? So you work hard at not knowing. And the media, which exists to sell advertisements and create illusions, largely helps you remain willfully ignorant. This suits the rapists just fine. The rape victims (including your humble cranky correspondent) are left to be abused and even killed, and America can pretend it doesn’t know.

Cowards, a whole nation; nay, a whole world of cowards. So long as it isn’t their child, wife, mother, or such being raped, no one wants to think about it. “It’s all so icky, it makes us feel gross, pleasepleaseplease stop talking about it and we can once more pretend we know nothing. Look at the pretty pictures, turn up the iPod, lalalalala, nothing to worry about, snooze…are they gone yet? Have they stopped talking yet? Whew, that’s a relief.”
