Montana State Senate Votes to Legalize Donating Roadkill to the Poor

Taylor Berman

On Thursday, the Montana State Senate voted 28-21 to pass the roadkill salvage bill, which "would allow residents to harvest for food big game animals like deer, elk and moose killed by vehicles." Of course, all that is dependent on Governor Steve Bullock, a Democrat, who has to sign to into law. Bullock hasn't indicated his support or objection to the bill, which, unsurprisingly, is divisive among Montana politicians, apparently along party lines.

Some see the bill – which would rely on permits issued Montana Department of Fish, Wildlife and Parks -as a good thing, a natural way to help those in need by using a food source that would otherwise be destroyed.

"It seems like a waste," said Representative Bill Lavin, the Republican sponsor of the bill, who is also a Montana Highway Patrolman. "This bill ... would allow me to legally call the food bank or allow somebody else who requests it to take it and use it," he said.

The number of deer I've seen by the side of the road is just not only sad, but disgusting that people go hungry when that is available food.

There's a lot of harvesting of road-kill animals that isn't documented, too. Deer routinely disappear from roadsides in MN very quickly. Lots of people here know how to butcher a deer.

bank if you care that much. But that would take money out of your pocket.

...and in nature we are just another critter in the food chain. This is Montana, not New York City Should we feed New Yorkers dead rats?

Delmar: "Care for some gopher?"

Everett: "No thank you, Delmar. A third of a gopher would only arouse my appetite without beddin' her back down."

Delmar: "Oh, you can have the whole thing. Me and Pete already had one. We ran across a whole gopher village."

Elk, deer and moose are hunted as food animals and some consider them excellent eating. Assuming the animal is freshly killed and safe for human consumption, then there is a choice to be made 1.) Feed it to hungry people; 2.) Let the scavengers eat it, or 3.) Throw the carcass in the garbage (where the scavengers will wind up with it anyway).

If you don't see a difference between feeding scavengers, insects and microbes, and feeding people, I'm speechless and where done here.

...just not road kill. The variables to viable healthy road kill are immense.

I simply responded to you saying it was a waste... it's not.

Do have a problem with donating it to food bank simply because of possibly that some arsehole will try to donate not so fresh kill. Also, it would put pressure on food banks to test the meat to ensure its fit for human consumption.

I would also expect the police or sheriff to have some involvement - hitting a deer frequently does substantial damage to the car and occupants are sometimes injured.

the same ones who process hunted deer. If it's not fresh, they won't process it. That's how it works in Minnesota, where there is also a program for hunters to donate deer for the same purpose. People are quite happy to get the meat, it seems, in this state. It's meat.

And why would it be a sign of disregard? People hunt game animals because they desire the meat. How often do food banks get to hand-out the equivalent of steaks?

I was passenger in a car that hit a deer and the driver was offered the deer when he refused the deputy got it. I think a food bank would have been at least as worthy.

In Colorado, state patrol officers are empowered to locate someone willing to use the meat and write them a special "tag" allowing them to take it; the driver who hit the deer or elk is disqualified.

The reasons should be obvious: the last thing we need is people hunting deer with their vehicles.
