WASHINGTON - The US public strongly favors considering military action against Iran to prevent it from obtaining a nuclear weapon, a poll found.
The Pew Research Center poll conducted March 13-17 found that 64 percent of Americans agree that it is "more important to prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons even if it means taking military action" as opposed to 24 percent who believe it is "more important to avoid military conflict even if Iran may develop nuclear weapons."
The poll also found that while many more Americans continue to favor Israel over the Palestinians, the gap narrows among younger Americans.
Overall, 49 percent of respondents said they sympathized with Israel more than with the Palestinians, while 12 percent said the reverse.

But still, even if it was 50%, that's way too high.

(36,418 posts)to 41%. See, http://www.pewresearch.org/2008/03/19/public-attitudes-toward-the-war-in-iraq-20032008/, and http://www.people-press.org/2013/03/18/a-decade-later-iraq-war-divides-the-public/
Apparently, 40% of the American people, according to Pew, continue to support almost any war we get ourselves into. But, the reality of protracted, costly wars tends to drive down support to that base level. Most come to realize that whatever initial enthusiasm they had for these "optional wars" was hysterical fears driven by a media environment of lies and propaganda.
War with Iran will end up being similarly unpopular. Support for that is at least ten points lower than it was for military action against Iraq a decade ago. Probably, real support for military conflict with Iran is considerably less, and will drop dramatically once the much more terrible costs of such a war starts to set in.

(11,076 posts)One would think that the last 12 years would have taught us something. These idiots don't even realize that the reason this country is in debt is because of the unfunded fiascoes of the recent past. Too poor to feed, house and educate our people yet we still feel the need to kill and destroy across the globe. I just can not wrap my arms around this.

(3,867 posts)From getting a nuke? Really, haven't we done (still doing) this? They haven't tested one yet, like NK. A country such as Iran having nukes is alarming, but is it worth the death of hundreds of thousands of people? Or plan is to kill more people than one nuke ever would in the idea that we will deter them from getting it. If a country or person wants one they can get it without making it themselves. Dialogue can help dissuade one from taking extreme actions more than violence.
Punch me in the face I punch you back, explain to me why I am wrong and I may see the err of my ways.
Just a thought.

(3,867 posts)will ever be, or ever has been for that matter. We meddle in the affairs of other countries and it bites us in the ass then we think the only solution is more meddling. We are the worlds leader in destruction and death. Not really a beacon on the hill for others to aspire to, but a unifying symbol of hate and division.
Countries around the world don't want to fight us, we will bankrupt ourselves to flatten the earth. They do however see us as the bully in the room that someone has to stand up to and bring down a peg. If we led in education, equality and advancement the rest of the world would view us as the great country we think we are.
Empires are a thing of the past, economies are too intertwined and co-dependent for one country to rule supremely. We can still be the greatest most powerful, but I believe there is a saying that those with true power know when not to use it. We haven't learned that yet.
The pukes and tehadists will do everything they can to destroy our country only to point to our Islamic Kenyan leader as the reason why.

I know no one who wants us to get into another middle eastern war. Especially with a country that couldn't possibly deliver a nuke on a missile to the US. I think we have a lot greater chance of some terrorist organization (like the ones we helped fan the flames for in Iraq and Afghanistan) to sneak in a nuke they acquired from the former USSR to the US. Hell, if the terrorists just combed Iraq for all the "depleted" uranium we dropped on them and made it into a dirty bomb to explode in the US then we'd be screwed there too.
Here's one where I'm with Rand Paul. Let's repeal the AUMF. Not that laws have really meant anything to administrations lately, but it's a start.

(32,886 posts)Looks like Pew is an outlier by about 5-10% depending on which other poll you look at and how they word the poll, but it does seem that most polls show Americans are in favor of military action against Iran.

(6,960 posts)Who in upper leadership in this country has been explaining what an attack on Iran will mean?
From the President and his administration and the Repuglicans we get basically the same message: Iran cannot be permitted to have an atomic bomb and all options are on the table to prevent that possibility.
I haven't heard any top leadership yet explain what such a war will cost; what the economic consequences will be of the turmoil in oil markets; or that there isn't a very high prospect for success ... let alone the cost in Iranian lives.
So, why wouldn't 64 percent want war right now?
Most Americans have been conditioned to love war ("thank you for your service" and to hate Arabs (yes, I know Iranians are Persians, but who here thinks that the 64 percent know that?).
I, too am of the inclination to believe that our Noble Peace Prize winning President will go along with Bibi and preemptively attack Iran.
Dawson Leery
(19,348 posts)With that said, it is plausible that a majority of Americans want to go to war with Iran. The majority of Americans live in fear.

(62,325 posts)still ongoing in Iraq. Considering the enormous failure of that foreign adventure, I would think you would not turn to those who were so completely wrong about it, to decide the next one.
I take that as the best reason so far NOT to even think of any military action in Iran.
