Erin Brockovich, Gibbs Looking into Mystery Illness in LeRoy
~snip
National environmental and health groups are beating a path to LeRoy, poking into the Genesee County community's startling cluster of teenage students with troubling neurological symptoms.
Groups led by environmental-activist icons Erin Brockovich and Lois Gibbs have been talking with parents and gathering background. A chapter of the Sierra Club has been digging into the LeRoy school's unusual connection with natural gas drilling. The Healthy Schools Network, Empire State Consumer Project and others are involved.
Leaders of these groups say authorities in New York may have acted too hastily in ruling out environmental contaminants, infectious illnesses or vaccinations as possible causes of the cluster, which now includes as many as 15 LeRoy Junior-Senior High School students who exhibit varying degrees of involuntary twitches and verbal outbursts not unlike those associated with Tourette's syndrome. Some report fainting spells and seizures, too.
The students, in both the senior and junior high parts of the building, are all girls with the possible exception of one newly diagnosed case.

Here are just a few things experts are evaluating:
5 natural gas wells ring the high school (fracking)
nearby toxic chemical spill
conversion disorder
recreational drug use
the human papillomavirus vaccine Gardasil

(31,874 posts)For where my mom and many friends of 30 years live. If it's in Leroy - it's in Scottsville, Batavia, etc. etc. Much like the Kodak explosion and chemical disposal issues - it's not contained to 10 square feet.

Tics and Toxins: Leroy Put Student Playing Fields on FEMA Flood Hazard Land
~snip
School officials who say environmental factors cant be responsible for the outbreak of tics at the Junior/Senior High School might want to check last years record rainfalls and the flood-prone ground right under their feet.
The tics broke out after an unusual pattern of heavy rain, followed by a mild winter that has kept the ground from freezing and left lots of standing water at Leroy Junior/Senior High School.
That should be no surprise. Part of the school grounds -- including athletic fields -- are right on top of a federally designated FEMA Flood Hazard Area. While a county official told us that the school itself sits on a slope just above the hazard area, the zone cuts right across the girls softball diamond, as well as the football/track field and another, larger baseball field.
