Durbin wants new fiscal commission. Wants to raise retirement age, cut COLA.

What is wrong with that man? He wants it to be fashioned like the old fiscal commission, aka the Bowles/Simpson Commission, or the Catfood Commission.

Durbin Proposes Social Security Commission

Durbin wants the commission to make recommendations to make Social Security solvent for 75 years. The panel would be expected to consider increases in the payroll tax, a higher retirement age and a lower annual cost-of-living adjustment for beneficiaries.

"You would basically say to a commission, within a very limited time frame, to come up with a proposal for 75-year solvency of Social Security and then — and this is important — it would be referred to both chambers on an expedited procedure," Durbin told reporters at a Washington breakfast sponsored by The Wall Street Journal…

Durbin's proposed 18-member commission would contain an equal number of Republicans and Democrats but require 14 votes to send a plan to Congress.

In a 1997 article at FAIR, John Hess said it very well. They are going to keep trying to "rescue"
Social Security until great harm is done.

Can Social Security Survive Another Rescue?

The rescue of Social Security has been a staple of American journalism for 20 years now—a story all the more remarkable in that Social Security has never been in peril except from its rescuers.

The rescues have all been based on faulty arithmetic. First, in 1977, the rescuers humbly confessed that they had made a mistake in adjusting benefits to inflation, as a result of which Social Security was threatening to go broke. (They never say the Army is threatening to "go broke," only that it needs more money to do the job that it's asked to do.) Not to worry. Amid the Yuletide hosannas of our massed punditry, our leaders found the courage to enact a correction that would, they swore, assure solvency into the 21st Century.

..In the early '80s, when income taxes were slashed and the great military buildup began, it was clear that some luxuries would have to be sacrificed, like housing, welfare, health and education. But Social Security was the promising target, one with a tax attached that bore mainly on the little folk. Because, however, the little people cherished their Social Security, a frontal attack by the Reagan White House was a political disaster, so a campaign of deception was mounted.

A bipartisan commission under Alan Greenspan went to work on the numbers, while the media developed an unprecedented campaign of vilification of the elderly. On magazine covers, in cartoons and columns and on broadcast commentaries innumerable, they were depicted as hogs, vampires, sharks, gorillas and card sharps scooping up the sustenance of the young. While the investment banker Peter G. Peterson led the media legions, Greenspan fabricated a hurricane warning. Multiplying one false assumption by another (for example, he assumed that the C.P.I. would rise nearly three times as fast as it actually did rise, while his private firm was forecasting an even smaller increase), he predicted that Social Security would go bankrupt in 1983.

Disappointed in Democrats like Durbin who are continuing this effort to cut the safety nets.

This is a brow-beating technique. Keeping reform alive instead of killing it. Pres Obama should say outright, that he will not sign a bill that cuts Medicare or SS. That would help kill this.

Dear Sen. Durbin,

There is no way to make Soc. Security solvent. We did this in the 80s. Payroll taxes were raised in order to make it solvent, and look where we are now. The Republicans will raid the fund as soon as it looks solvent.

I get a small federal pension and have basic family Blue Cross so those measly Colas don't cover much besides the 10 to 15% yearly increases in the Blue Cross premiums ($299 per month for me and husband) plus the ever increasing deductibles and copays that we have to pay ourselves. Colas were already cut back in the 80's and the Reagan era Social Security cuts are still being phased in so that younger beneficiaries get less and less.

15. Durbin in 2011
Mon Mar 25, 2013, 05:02 PM

"We're very, very close," Durbin said. "And there's a sense of urgency. Our relevance is going to be hooked to our timeliness. If we wait too long, we may not be players. And a lot of people are counting on us to be players."

Durbin criticized a resolution put forward by Sen. Bernie Sanders, a liberal independent from Vermont, that says Social Security should not be cut under a deficit reduction plan. Durbin said he would not vote for such a resolution.

"I think Bernie is going too far with his language," Durbin said.

"In 2037, as we know it, Social Security falls off a cliff," he said. "There's a 22 percent reduction rate in payments, which is really not something we can tolerate. If we deal with it today, it's an easier solution than waiting. I think we ought to deal with it. Many of my colleagues disagree, put it off to another day. But from my point of view, leaving it out makes it easier politically, including it, I think, meets an obligation, which we have to senior citizens."

27. Chained CPI is a plan to make sure that middle class kids never receive
Mon Mar 25, 2013, 06:06 PM
Mar 2013

a penny of their parents money.

Here is how it will work. Mr. & Mrs. S. work all their lives, pay into Social Security and save. Their great dream is to leave just a little to their kids and grandkids when they die.

In 2008, the banks fail due to their own mismanagement and greed. In order to make up the shortfall they limit interest payments on deposits, CDs and all the other kinds of "conservative" investments that seniors are advised to make.

Mr. & Mrs. S. each receive the average amount of Social Security giving them $2,500 per month, a mortgage of $800, insurance, utilities including heat in the winter, Medicare co-payments including the monthly Medicare charge, car upkeep, car insurance, an occasional visit to the grandkids, Thanksgiving dinner, Christmas gifts and a very small amount for clothing. They like to be able to contribute a little to their church and to charity.

As time passes, prices rise. They knew when they retired that they would have to cut back. That was part of the bargain. So they cut back on eating red meat to once a week and ate chicken in between. They switched to the most inexpensive of everything. Chicken maybe three times a week. Beef never. Sausage just for the taste in between. Lots of beans. Lots and lots of beans.

They bought fewer and fewer clothes. Faced with a choice, they picked internet over cable.

And now chained CPI is planned. What will it mean for Mr. & Mrs. S. They will eat meat only once a week (remember the promise of "a chicken in every pot" Henry IV of France) and will cut back on their winter heat as well as the use of their car.

Their kids will pick up the tab when grandma and grandpa visit, and help pay for the Thanksgiving turkey as well as some of the healthcare costs. Mr. & Mrs. S. will not leave anything to their children. It costs a lot to die, the medical care, the convalescence, help at home with housework that they can no longer do, and finally assisted living and hospice care.

Meanwhile, the multi-billionaires like the Koch Brothers, the CEOs of the banks, the computer companies, the insurance companies, the import companies, the exploiters, Rupert Murdoch, and the rest will leave their mansions, their fortunes, their airplanes, their businesses, their political philosophy and a bright future for their children -- tax-free.

Forget greed. Forget fairness. Is that reasonable? Why should the middle class pay so that the children of the Kochs, etc. can inherit fortunes tax-free?

Your attempt to discredit FDR is pathetic, historically ignorant, and transparent.
Are you willing to embarrass yourself further by attacking Jefferson, Franklin, and all the other founders of our nation because they were "racists"?

It is not fair to use contemporary standards to force a moral judgement
on a historical figure. It is only valid to judge them by the contemporary standards in which they lived.
Truth is that the USA was a "racist" nation during FDR's time,
and the WAR against the Japanese People was fired by horribly racist propaganda,
much more so than the War on the Germans.

I assume you are referring to The Internment.
I can also assume that you know very little about the conditions on the West Coast immediately after the attack on Pearl Harbor, or you wouldn't make such a dumb ass statement.
The Spielberg Movie "1941" was an understatement of the hysteria and fear of anything Asian at that time.
The Internment had the overwhelming approval of the American Congress and the American People at that time. There were vigilante gangs "patrolling" the West Coast , and there is documentation of beatings and killings of suspected Japanese.

A logically valid and accurate approach toward the question of FDR's racism would be to see if FDR aided or impeded any advancement of Minorities under his administration.

"In our day these economic truths have become accepted as self-evident. We have accepted, so to speak, a second Bill of Rights under which a new basis of security and prosperity can be established for all—regardless of station, race, or creed.

Among these are:

*The right to a useful and remunerative job in the industries or shops or farms or mines of the nation;

*The right to earn enough to provide adequate food and clothing and recreation;

*The right of every farmer to raise and sell his products at a return which will give him and his family a decent living;

*The right of every businessman, large and small, to trade in an atmosphere of freedom from unfair competition and domination by monopolies at home or abroad;

*The right of the people to free, unimpeded travel.

*The right of every family to a decent home;

*The right to adequate medical care and the opportunity to achieve and enjoy good health;

*The right to adequate protection from the economic fears of old age, sickness, accident, and unemployment;

*The right to a good education.

All of these rights spell security. And after this war is won we must be prepared to move forward, in the implementation of these rights, to new goals of human happiness and well-being.

America's own rightful place in the world depends in large part upon how fully these and similar rights have been carried into practice for all our citizens."--FDR, 1944

The above was excerpted from FDR's State of the Union speech in 1944.
Please take note of the bolded phrase in the above:
"security and prosperity can be established for all—regardless of station, race, or creed.

With THAT statement, FDR established Racial Equality as a policy goal of the Democratic Party.

I challenge YOU to find such an Official Proclamation from ANY Democrat
that pre-dates FDR's policy statement of Racial Equality.

As to your challenge, just do a DU search.

You will find many fine DUers pointing out FDR's failure to pass anti-lynching laws. This proves not only that he was a racist- but suggests DUs own FDR nostalgists might be racist by association if they keep insisting that Obama be inspired by FDR instead of non racists like Lincoln, Nixon, or Reagan(except for this instance).

... I think I figured it all out.. Since the Republicans are going down the drain, what is going to become of them? The Republican Party? They are goners. The ones who are going to become Republicans are the DLC Democrats. The Blue Dogs. The Conservadems. The Jim Durbins, the Blanche Lincolns, my mind just went blank--you fill in the rest.

Yeah, Durbin wants another Commission. That's when they get together and talk something to death, only this time they will have nine of the current "Republicans" and and nine Blue Dogs. Kabuki Theater. Kangaroo Court. Fixed before it begins.

Here's what I say to Dick Durbin:

Sorry, Dick, I ain't buyin' it. No more Commissions. Hands off Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid. If you want some money, go to Wall Street. That's where all the effin money is. If you put one greedy finger on the Big 3, you are putting a gun to the heads of all the old folks, all their children and care-givers. You're putting a gun to the head of all the less fortunate who rely on Medicaid. You want some money? Ask your rich donors to create about seven million jobs, and Voila'! there's your money. Bring the jobs back and pay em' higher wages this time. Oh, and here's another effing place you can find most of the money: the MIC.

Durbin's second-biggest sector for campaign contributions, after lawyers and law firms, is "Securities and Investment."

Wall Street has been pushing the privatization and dismantling of Social Security and other public programs for a long time.

Follow the money....
