Looks like the Komen Message Board is having a problem dealing with the PP scandal.

Dear Message Board Members,
Please be aware that we are attempting to manage the Planned Parent hood threads for you as quickly as possible. These forums are here to offer survivors and co-survivors a place for support, education and friendship as they deal with the daily impact of this disease. We want to ensure that we manage other topics outside of this purpose in a way that allows open debate but without hindering this primary purpose.
We are merging the majority of the threads on this topic into one thread (we are not deleting them). However, we are also reviewing each post and will remove any that violate our posted policies regarding board conduct.
Thank you for your patience as we organize this topic for you, and as always thank you for your support.

Edit: Here are a couple of posts from members:

How can an organization that has done so much for women turn its back on Planned Parenthood? It is sickening to see Planned Parenthood demonized by the right wing, and now an organization like Komen is jumping aboard. Absolutely disheartening.

I am completely disheartened by their decision to sever their partnership with Planned Parenthood. As a breast cancer survivor, my family always supported Komen and had faith in their missions. We will be donating our $, our $ raised through marathons and all of our support to other organizations.

that a lot of people are upset about this. Now, people just have got to take that anger and outrage (and themselves) to the voting booths.

and came across a lot of 'studies' trying to link abortion to breast cancer (which the American Cancer Society denounces by the way). Apparently, that is the latest meme in the anti-choice circles. I'm also disheartened that none of the organizations that are supposed to encourage research has yet to fund a substantial study for lesbians. Every other demographic has been studied and has detailed research for their community, yet lesbians don't. If Komen is going to drop PP because of politics, I can't imagine them being a driving force for the lesbian community.

and at what age. Statistically, women who have children before age 30 and nurse their children for a year or more have added protection against the disease. There is NO credible evidence that having an abortion puts one at risk. Unbelievable what the right wing puts out there to strip women of their rights. Oh, and don't hold your breath about Komen putting any research money into lesbians' health issues. I don't know anything about this, but surely some research is out there, albeit probably not substantial. I know that on another bc message board I frequent, there is a thread for lesbians.

to get reliable conclusions. There is the school of thought that lesbians run a higher risk of breast cancer because of the reproduction issue but, again, there's no real data to back that up. It could be argued that the opinion is based on homophobia too.

Then there's the whole issue of lesbians having to out ourselves to our doctor's and hope they don't have issue with that. That may be another reason why there 'appears' to be more breast cancer among lesbians, because so many of us are afraid to be honest about who we are, so we don't get regular screening... so many issues.

We DON"T come out until later in life many times.I,for one, seriously doubt a physiological connection between lesbian lifestyle and breast cancer.I DO believe that many (including myself) don't admit their sexuality to their physicians...especially in a hate-mecca like Texas.

because I'm under the (false) assumption that they can see beyond my sexuality and care about my health concerns because we're both women.

So far, fingers crossed, I've not run into issues but it's always uncomfortable when I have to out myself to a perfect stranger who holds my health (and a speculum) in her hands. I had one doctor, a female at a woman-run clinic (not PP) who was great about the whole thing. She knows, for some lesbians, a gyno exam can be very uncomfortable and used size appropriate equipment. I miss that clinic -- it was defunded because it didn't generate enough revenue.

If there are columns for projected donations and actual donations, and the "actual" shows a big falloff, I guess they can retroactively change the projection. Again, simple and problem solved.

Seems to me that the overwhelming number of women there are against Komen. This is in line with the general U.S. population, the majority of which favors choice.
