Wisconsin falls to 44th in private-sector job creation

As the national employment recovery slowly has begun to brighten, Wisconsin struggles to keep pace, according to the latest credible government jobs data.

Wisconsin ranked 44th out of the 50 states in private-sector job creation in the 12 months from September 2011 to September 2012. The state's position has deteriorated progressively from a revised rank of 41st in the previous 12-month period through June 2012; and from a rank of 37th in the 12 months through March 2012.

"Wisconsin is falling behind," said Abdur Chowdhury, an economics professor at Marquette University.

The data, released Thursday by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, is called the Quarterly Census of Employment and Wages. It's based on a census of 96% of all American non-farm employers, public and private, which makes it the most exhaustive and credible information available on job creation. Because it is so complete, the quarterly data always comes with a half-year time lag.

Its publication Thursday coincided with other sobering economic news for Wisconsin, including estimates that the state's unemployment rate rose for a second consecutive month in February.

They are True American Patriots.

Sacrificing their economy so other Americans, in less fortunate states, can do well for a while.

3. Rankings aren't quite right

There's a quirk in the BLS rankings shown that is the source for the jsonline.com article: they round to the nearest 0.1%, then alphabetically. So sometimes Wisconsin appears lower down in the rankings than states that we actually did better than.

For example, Wisconsin ranked 11th among the 50 states in 2010 in private-sector job growth, outperforming the nation as a whole. But it dropped to 38th in 2011, Gov. Scott Walker's first year in office.

...and this:

But wages in Wisconsin fell faster and harder than most of the nation. When ranked by the percentage change in all private-sector employment, Wisconsin average wages had the 45th-worst ranking out of 50 states.

250,000 jobs promise course: +2.65%

CES results for 2012Q4 suggest that we'll lose another quarter percent and drop to 45th place. The Philly Fed's leading index has Wisconsin GDP growth (let alone jobs) virtually flat for the next 6 months.

Wages are down nationwide, which is worrying, but only by 1.1% for 2012Q3 vs 2011Q3. In Wisconsin's case the drop is 2.2%.
