I am not one of those Wil Wheaton fanboys. I think hes great and all, but I wasnt into any of the Star Trek television series, and a place like Comic-Con or Mega-Con or Nerd-Con or Neckbeard-Con is as close to my idea of hell as you can get. Wil Wheaton to me is still Gordie from Stand by Me, a movie I taped off of television and watched every day on a crappy VCR after school for something like 3 months in the 90s. I dont have a particularly strong sense of affection for Wheaton, though: He seems like a nice guy, and hes been great for nerd culture, his appearances on Big Bang Theory notwithstanding.
But last night, I was sitting in my car about to go into pub trivia and checking Facebook on my phone, when I ran across a story that many of you have may have also seen on your Facebook walls. Im not sure what compelled me to read it, but five minutes later, my heart may have swollen 3 sizes and there was definitely something in my eye.
Well worth reading the rest at the link. Only about 2 more paragraphs!

(1,941 posts)Loved his reviews of his trek episodes he did. He gets the crusher hate.
However, Wheaton the character is an asshole! Hehe. Total cock on Big Bang theory where he plays himself in an evil way. Also was a cock on Eureka but did it with aplomb. Can't wait to see what he does next! He will probably still be evil.

(1,245 posts)The first few appearances he was a dick (then again, Sheldon deserves to have people be dicks to him, since he's pretty much the biggest dick in the world), but the one I last saw him on, WW was cool.
This is a great story, though. Hope it's not made up.

(17,863 posts)worship for folks like Jerry West, Johnny Bench, Jack Kirby, Carl Sagan, Philip Jose Farmer, Larry Niven, and Tom Baker. I probably would have invaded their personal space then.
I grew up. No way would I ever go up and talk to them or any of the other stars of today. I respect their privacy too much. We could do a whole lot more growing up in this country and stop with the fan worship (whether it is an athlete or a scientist). If these people give you joy, give them some in return by allowing them to live normal lives. I heard a story on NPR about an author who has written about fame. He mentioned that he and Robin Williams saw each other preparing to job while standing outside of their apartment buidling. Williams looked normal and just enjoying himself. He eyes turned cold once he realized that the author recognized him.

(17,863 posts)I think she handled it very well. Even at conventions the personal space gets invaded (you can read about it in the article).

(1,945 posts)Although I keep my facebook page just to keep in touch with family and a few 'real' friends, I recently started following Wil Wheaton's page. He seems to be pretty intelligent and down to earth. Last week, during the Supreme Court hearing on Prop 8, in response to Scalia's comments Wil posted "Scalia is a pig". That really endeared him to me!

Btw, for those not aware of Wheaton's snarky sense of humor, check out his reviews of some ST:TNG episodes.

(27,985 posts)but his persona on the web and his guest starring on Big Bang. This matches perfectly the down to earth way he seems. He, like George Takai, seems more genuine than starlike. This is a fine example of that. He gets boundaries and yet he also gets when it's not only okay but imperative to break down those boundaries.
This didn't change my high opinion of the man one bit. But it did put a tear in my eye.

Wil himself is truly a decent guy. This kind of story demonstrates it!
