Kenny, a 49-year-old licensed National Rifle Association instructor who leads training classes in pistol and rifle use, delivered his arguments in the front foyer of the two-family Edgewood Avenue house where he rents an upstairs apartment in the Edgewood neighborhood.
Wearing an NRA hooded sweatshirt, he had his left foot in a cast because he accidentally shot a bullet last week while cleaning his Glock handgun.
I usually always cock it back and it usually ejects a shell thats in the chamber, he recalled. You pull the trigger to release the slide ... This time there was a cartridge in there. And BANG! Hit my ankle.

Vazquez said his detectives are also still investigating the theft of a safe last November from Kennys apartment. It contained around 10 gunsmostly handguns, plus a Saiga 12 rifle. I took a hit, $8,000 worth of firearms in that theft, Kenny said.

Gosh, I wonder what the thieves did with them?

(23,973 posts)He didn't visually inspect the chamber to see if a round was present?
HE ASSUMED IT WAS EMPTY????
Oy.
He's just lucky he only shot and wounded himself, and didn't kill anyone else.

(35,699 posts)You can't make this shit up no matter how hard you try.
"And how he did the right thingsaving his lifeby pointing the gun toward the ground, not at his head or chest, as he cleaned it."

If I were in a gun safety class and found out that the instructor shot himself in the foot while certified as a gun safety instructor I would walk out and ask for my money back.

"I've never accidentally discharged a firearm!" they boast.
"You don't have to worry about me!" they cry.
Yes, I do.
Everyone makes mistakes, EVERYONE.
I don't want to die for their first ever fuck-up.

(35,699 posts)How anyone rationalizes any thing "right" about shooting themselves in the foot is beyond me.

(23,973 posts)It did seem to be rather mocking in tone, but, what do I know?

(23,973 posts)Very well couldn't have written, "Then the dumbass shot himself in the foot, because he's a bleeding moron", but we got the message anyway.
Brevity is indeed the soul of wit.

(18,663 posts)the only reason to ever pull a trigger should be to fire the gun.
Beyond that, so much fail I don't know where to begin. He needs to go back to class as a student before ever touching a gun again.
yellowcanine
(35,699 posts)Also seems to me there should be a way to remove a shell from the chamber without having to cock it. That seems like a defect as well.
sarisataka
(18,663 posts)is the only way which will remove a round from an auto loader, which also cocks it. A person is supposed to look to make sure the round is gone on the rare chance the round does not eject.
I usually instruct people to do it 3 times to be sure- ridiculous redundancy pays off if it keeps you from shooting yourself or someone one time.
Most guns you do not need to pull the trigger at any point. For those that you must, it makes sense, to put the barrel on something like a thick phone book to at least slow the round if you missed seeing it those three times.

(679 posts)From the NRA's own website:
The fundamental NRA rules for safe gun handling are:
1. ALWAYS keep the gun pointed in a safe direction.
This is the primary rule of gun safety. A safe direction means that the gun is pointed so that even if it were to go off it would not cause injury or damage. The key to this rule is to control where the muzzle or front end of the barrel is pointed at all times. Common sense dictates the safest direction, depending on different circumstances.
2. ALWAYS keep your finger off the trigger until ready to shoot.
When holding a gun, rest your finger on the trigger guard or along the side of the gun. Until you are actually ready to fire, do not touch the trigger.
http://training.nra.org/nra-gun-safety-rules.aspx
You'd think an NRA instructor would at least follow the simplest of gun safety rules????

(9,186 posts)it will lock in place and you can visually inspect the weapon to ensure it is TRULY unloaded, then you THUMB the release to close the slide. Unless you get careless and pull the trigger because it is faster.
But he is the subject matter expert and already knew that...
