I met him at the bank today, and we struck up a conversation about his banged up nose, black eye & broken arm.
When he told me where he fell, I asked him if anyone came to help him immediately ( It is a very busy street).
The ONLY person who came to help him ..and who directed traffic around him, was a homeless woman.
She had no phone, but managed to use his to call for help for him.. She stayed with him until an ambulance came...and then they unceremoniously shooed her away ..

(54 posts)out of the norm happens so they just ignore it.
A few times in my life I have been in situations where a person needed help of some sort and most people panic or just don't know what to do until someone takes control of the situation.
It has been said before 'People are scared panicky animals' and it is very true.

(15,139 posts)destroyed the front end and engine compartment. Fortunately my then 10-year-old daughter and I were only shaken up but ok. This was in my neighborhood not too far from my house. A bunch of people drove by and gawked. No one stopped to see if there was anything they could do to help. A few weeks later a woman I knew casually told me she had passed by the accident and proceeded to ask if my car was totaled. No concern for me. Callous world in which we live.

(2,674 posts)I am disabled and most of the time I must use a cane to walk and I walk very carefully and slowly. People are always offering to help me, to open doors for me, to help carry things, they couldn't be kinder. Most of the time I don't need the help, but it is nice to know that strangers can be so nice. I have been in New York city and people there have been just as helpful as my fellow Texans.
That said one day, one day, I was at the Dallas Farmer's Market and my car broke down as I was pulling out of my parking spot. I needed to push the car back into the spot because I was blocking all the traffic going through the market. Not one person offered to help me. I tried to push the car by myself, but could not make it move, finally one of the vendors, a very elderly man who hobbled when he walked, came over and offered to help push the car back in the space. It shamed the strong young men to see an old man and old lady pushing a car and they finally came to help out.

She looked at me, a 57 year woman and said, "How are you going to move this car?" I said, "Watch." "So I went behind the car and started to push." Guys jumped out of 3 different cars. I could then just walk away. I got her car moved!

(20,876 posts)When someone falls and you see it what you should do is cover the person with a blanket, etc. and call an ambulance. That is what should be done in all cases.
How often does it happen like this I often wonder.
Thank God that lady was there to help him.
Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.

(63,221 posts)I have lived in a number of large cities and have done so many times. I sometimes think that people in large cities are more caring than people in less metropolitan areas. In NYC, when someone was injured or had fallen in the street, a number of us would rush to their rescue and help, call an ambulance or do what was needed to assist them. It was just instinct to me. I would never ignore someone in need.
