Saline County, Kansas Commissioner Jim Gile (R) told the Salina Journal it was a "bad choice of words" when he used the expression "nigger-rigging it" in a heated discussion that was being recorded.
Gile insisted that he meant to say "jury-rigged," noting "I had it on my brain and this came out. It was a bad choice of words. I'm sorry."
"bad choice of words": You think?

(21,475 posts)I have heard of Jerry-rigging, or Jimmy-rigging, but never heard the term he used. I must have lived a sheltered life..

(79,302 posts)when i was in the Army stationed in Indiana, one of my bosses was a sort of low rent redneck hustler.
he accumulated a lot of junk and was always working on stuff like lawn mowers, etc.
one day he was discussing fixing one and made the comment that maybe he could "nigger rig it".
he looked up and saw me and turned red as a tomato.
I was confused as I, too, never heard the expression and asked him to explain it to me.
It means fixing something using the bare minimum, as blacks always had to make do with very little.
afterwards we both laughed our asses off. he was a farm boy from missouri and i'm sure didn't mean any harm. that was an expression he grew up with.
