NOBLESVILLE, Ind | Sat Feb 4, 2012 9:38am EST
(Reuters) - An Indiana jury convicted embattled Republican Secretary of State Charlie White in the early hours of Saturday on six out of seven felony charges including perjury, theft and voter fraud. ....
White had maintained he was living in the basement of his ex-wife's home within the district he represented. Prosecutors introduced documents they believed told a different story, that he lived outside the district with his fiancee. ....
State law requires Republican Governor Mitch Daniels to appoint a new secretary of state if White resigns or is removed from office following a felony conviction. ....
Using his ex-wife's address allowed White to retain a $1,000-a-month stipend for his council seat and continue to pursue his political ambitions, prosecutors said. ....
The Marion County judge ruled that the Democrat White defeated by more than 340,000 votes in 2010, Vop Osili, should be declared the winner of the election. ....

Rick Santorum Fails to Qualify for Indiana Ballot
.... Candidates needed 500 verified signatures from each of the nine congressional districts in the state.
The Indiana GOP told ABC News that Santorum fell short in the seventh congressional district, where the state capitol and largest city, Indianapolis, is located.
The state does not allow write-in candidates, but Santorum told reporters Friday in Fulton, Mo., that the campaign is challenging the decision. He blamed falling short of the signature requirement on re-districting and signatures that were disqualified. The former Pennsylvania senator said hes confident he will end up on the ballot.
From our perspective and they invalidated a whole bunch of signatures were going to review, Santorum said. Were only 24 short. They invalidated 200 that they said were not good because of ditto marks, things like that. Were going to go back and look. We have to make up 24 signatures and I think the fundamental issue is you cant have petitions circulated and have one district be one thing and then half way through have the district change and not count the signatures that were given at the time that they were in fact in that district. So weve got some very credible, Im sure solid, legal challenges, and I have no doubt that well be on the ballot there. ....
