All the little landmarks...

Watching this unfold on TV, I keep seeing images of landmarks in my life both large and small. I've worn three pairs of glasses I purchased at this Lenscrafters. The glasses on my wife's face were purchased there. My friends Neil and Aaron also wear glasses purchased there. I've walked past the place ten thousand times. My friend Walt knows a woman who works there, but who didn't work yesterday. My friend Mike had an appointment there next week. My upstairs neighbor was 25 feet away from this store when one of the bombs went off. He thought, "Fireworks?" until he looked down and saw what was all over the street.

They are far more resilient to blast damage and cheaper than glass.

The plate glass would have "flexed" with the blast, which is probably what shattered it. The globes would actually deflect the sound wave around them.
