There's nowhere to legally buy grenades in the US. They clearly bought at least those illegally, so why not their guns, too?

You could get them from the same people who sold weed or coke. I think people underestimate how much of a straight-out black market there is for guns.

You are hitting all the usual NRA talking points. But there was an actual study done once that examined the black market for guns in Chicago, and found that, contrary to what the NRA always says, underground markets are "thin" and "transaction costs are considerable".

This article provides an economic analysis of underground gun markets, drawing on interviews with gang members, gun dealers, professional thieves, prostitutes, police, public school security guards and teenagers in the city of Chicago, complemented by results from government surveys of recent arrestees in 22 cities, plus administrative data for suicides, homicides, robberies, arrests and confiscated crime guns. We find evidence that transactions costs are considerable in the underground gun market in Chicago, and to some extent in other cities as well. The most likely explanation is that the underground gun market is both illegal and thin – relevant information about trading opportunities is scarce due to illegality, which makes search costly for market participants and leads to a market thickness effect on transaction costs

Read very carefully:

I lived in Washington DC during the gun ban. I bought drugs during that time, and was offered a gun for purchase at the same place.

Got it? Chicago may well have been different, I don't know. I'm talking about DC in the mid-90s. Back when the police wouldn't come near anywhere east of the park and having a gun was actually probably a pretty good idea.

It proves that we need tighter trafficking laws to reduce the amount of guns that get diverted to criminal markets.

We need that much more than more laws that also go unenforced like the ones we have now (tens of thousands of illegal attempts to buy guns annually... law enforcement follows up on a dozen or so).

so I'd think smaller bombs could be made. Perhaps not technically "grenades", but I think it would be understandable if the correct terminology wasn't used.
