Big Miracle is the story of three gray whale stranded in the ice near Point Barrow Alaska. I had completely forgotten about this story.
It happens in 1988 and there is more politics in the movie - Greenpeace (Drew Barrymore), big oil (Ted Danson) and the end of the Reagan administration.
At the end of the movie the lead character - John Krasinski from "The Office" - doesn't go for the big network reporting jobs but stays in Anchorage. He is the anchorman for the local news and he segues to sports....
Sarah, it's not all Iditarod news is it?

(46,436 posts)since it's the first major production under our new movie tax incentives. We have a personal friend who's in it as well as lots of local celebrities, news people, etc. It's great that a movie about Alaska has finally actually been filmed IN ALASKA. What a concept.
Watch for "Frozen Ground" coming out later this year, I believe, starring John Cusack and Nicolas Cage, also filmed entirely in Alaska. This one is about Bad Bob the Baker, Bob Hansen, who was responsible for the deaths of several women here in the '80s. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_Hansen Surprisingly, Cusack plays the murderer and Cage is the cop.
There are rumors of another even bigger flick to be filmed up here next year.
Some in the legislature don't like this program since the state pays about 30% of the production expenses, but I think the film industry is a wonderful alternative to Big Oil and for a fraction of the cost. Gov. Parnell (SP v. 2.0) wants to modify our oil tax to give those guys a $2 billion a year break.
