http://www.accuweather.com/en/us/rockford-il/61101/weather-radar/328767I look at this weather map all the time. There are several doughnut shapes showing in Texas, Missouri, Illinois and Iowa. Does anyone have any input as to what is causing them?
Thanks for your ideas.

What was the question?

(53,339 posts)I had in-laws in South Valley and used to enjoy my visits there--especially during fair season. Great town!

(7,658 posts)PM me if you ever are heading this way again....Oops, HAD in laws...Guess you ain't heading this way any time soon..But if you do...

(53,339 posts)Yeah, the in-laws are exes but we all remain on good terms. It's a wonderful family that has 12 great kids--many of whom are still there.
I haven't done a cross-country road trip in a while, but when I do I usually plan on stopping in ABQ. Especially when the Sandias are snowed in. I nearly got frostbite once having to put my chains on heading up to the pass in a storm. (I also broke my shoulder once while inner-tubing in the Sandias.)
But I know I can count on you to steer us to the best places for food and salsa--rain, snow or shine.

(45,851 posts)Go to 3:36 for the start of the episode with the donuts, it's sped up a bit for some reason.

They don't pick up anything directly over head for some reason.

(111,339 posts)You'll see it at the NOAA site all over the country on the big maps.
It's doing a good job of showing that squall line off to the west, though.

But now I want doughnuts and to see massive crop circles plastered all over the news in the morning.
Thank you and good night.

(1,985 posts)when the radar shows it is. Also it is cold and humid here.
Thanks for helping me learn something.

(16,201 posts)The radar gets refracted by the atmosphere at night and causes some of the beam to hit the ground and bounce back. It creates a circle around many stations at night, especially in summer. The computer software usually edits out the bad reflections. The dead spot is the area closest to the radar tower.
The Doppler systems have different settings, based on the type of weather expected. If a radar is in clear weather mode, and it's very humid, then the beams get refracted.
