Anders Breivik, the man who admitted killing 77 people in a bombing and shooting spree in Norway last year, has appeared before the cameras for the first time since the murders as he attended his final detention hearing before his trial begins in April.
He called on the Oslo court to award him a medal for the attacks and he added I acknowledge the acts but I plead not guilty.
Many of the survivors were in the packed courtroom: He was very arrogant and that was hard for me because judging by the way he looked when he came in, I dont think he regrets what he has done, said one.
The right-wing extremist admitted detonating a fertilizer bomb that killed eight people in Oslo last July before gunning down 69 young activists of the governing Labour Party, who were attending a summer camp on a nearby island.

(24,692 posts)just guilty of the massacre, is that he could be detained indefinitely rather than the 21 year limit associated with a guilty verdict.
Don't know enough about the Norwegian justice system to know if that is true or not.

(25,704 posts)Under our law (and we are not Norway) he would be considered sane. He knows exactly what he did and why he did it. He did not do it because God or Martians told him to do it. He did it because he is a terrorist. He had a political goal and he went about achieving it.
The old saying is hard cases make for bad law. Maximum 21 years in jail for terrorism is a bad law. Yet nations should strive to be nations of law not of men. Calling him mentally ill is not true.
All that said, what I don't know about Norwegian criminal and mental health laws is vast.

The Wall Street Journal And Jerusalem Post Publish Editorials Saying Norwegian Terrorist Had A Point
Norway continues to mourn the scores of victims from a terror attack allegedly committed by an anti-Muslim far-right extremist named Anders Breivik. Yet just days after the attack, major right-wing papers have published op-eds and editorials that are claiming that while this extremist was wrong to committ violence, his cause was just.
First, the Wall Street Journal published an op-ed today by Bruce Bawer, an American expatriate author living in Europe. He argued that while Breiviks terrorism was wrong, the real tragedy is that the attacks have dealt a heavy blow to the urgent cause of highlighting the alleged threat Muslims pose to Europe:

It appears that the Wall Street Journal and Jerusalem Post are endorsing the idea that while the Norwegian terrorist should not have resorted to violence, his anti-Islam message was noble and should not be ignored simply because of its messenger.

(24,692 posts)Right-wing extremist Anders Behring Breivik who killed 77 people
last July demands to be released at an Oslo court hearing.
ANDERS Behring Breivik, the Norwegian who killed 77 people last July, smirked and raised his arm in a right-wing salute as he was led into court handcuffed and dressed in a dark suit for the final hearing before his trial on April 16.
''I acknowledge the acts but I plead not guilty. I do not accept imprisonment. I demand to be immediately released,'' he told the Oslo District Court.
Breivik read from a prepared statement as he boasted that his killing rampage, carried out with a bomb, a rifle and a handgun last year, was a ''preventive attack against state traitors'' who supported immigration. ''We, the Norwegian resistance movement, will not just stand by while we are made a minority in our own country.''
The right-wing extremist has claimed he is a commander of a militant organisation aiming to overthrow European governments and replace them with ''patriotic'' regimes that would deport Muslim immigrants. ... But police have not found any trace of the network of ''Knights Templar'' and say Breivik carried out the attacks on his own.
