This is a pretty unbelievable story for Long Island. Long Islanders love their police stations. People moved out to the burbs years ago for a safer life than what the big city had to offer. People on LI like all people don't want gun play, shoot outs, robberies, slow response, etc. The police on LI are well paid and a source of pride. That was great until the republicans got in charge.
The republican wanna be teabagger County Exec Ed Mangano and his republican legislator stooges want to shut down HALF of the police stations. They would go from 8 to 4! The 4 closed stations would be rebranded as "Community Policing Centers" staffed by 2 desk cops handing out accident reports. It's a bullshit plan that will make Nassau County more dangerous. It's also an attack on unionized police officers and unionized staff.
The republicans can't figure out any other way to save or raise money. But they can harm the security of Long Islanders.
MINEOLA, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) Some outraged Nassau County residents, upset by a plan to shut down half of its police precincts, spoke at a Public Safety Committee meeting Monday.
Milagros Vicente, a mom from North Valley Stream, was among those who showed up and spoke at the meeting. She brought a petition from her neighborhood, trying stop the Fifth Precinct from closing.
In an hour and a half, actually, I got 78 signatures in just an hour and a half, Vicente said. Yesterday, people thought I was crazy because it was the Super Bowl and people were asking me Why you coming around when its the Super Bowl time? I said This is more important than the Super Bowl. I love football and Im glad the Giants won, but this is more important.
Under the plan, Nassau County will be implementing a new Community Policing Plan, which includes the closing of four of the areas eight police precincts.

Mangano said the plan will save taxpayers up to $20 million a year, eliminating over 100 desk jobs and slashing overtime costs.
Abrahams said the money is not worth sacrificing the safety of the public.
Thats one of the things that people in Nassau County value the most is their public safety. This definitely will be detrimental to the police department, Abrahams said.

This is what happens when you put republicans in charge. They talk a lot, but have no idea how to govern.
