Syrian Ministry Of Defense Website Hacked By 'Anonymous'

The activist hacker group known as Anonymous appears to have vandalized the website of the Syrian Ministry of Defense. Visitors to the website early Monday morning were greeted with the green, white and black stripes and red stars of the Syrian flag. After a few moments, the Anonymous logo appears in the middle of the flag, above the following text in English and Arabic:

To the Syrian people: The world stands with you against the brutal regime of Bashar Al-Assad. Know that time and history are on your side - tyrants use violence because they have nothing else, and the more violent they are, the more fragile they become. We salute your determination to be non-violent in the face of the regime's brutality, and admire your willingness to pursue justice, not mere revenge. All tyrants will fall, and thanks to your bravery Bashar Al-Assad is next.

To the Syrian military: You are responsible for protecting the Syrian people, and anyone who orders you to kill women, children, and the elderly deserves to be tried for treason. No outside enemy could do as much damage to Syria as Bashar Al-Assad has done. Defend your country - rise up against the regime! - Anonymous

A member of Anonymous who was involved in the attack on the Ministry website told The Huffington Post Monday morning that the action was part of a broader effort by the loosely-affiliated group to focus on political targets.

1. Now the fun begins. Will those here against a removal of Assad throw Anonymous under the bus?

It will be interesting since those most vehemently arguing against the general consensus of world opinion that Assad must go are generally those who like Anonymous the most.

11. Anonymous? The very nature of that outfit is that anybody could be it.

Could be just as well a hacking specialist on State Department's or CIA's payroll who did it.
Could be the group is half made of people on CIA's payroll. Wasn't Private Manning ratted out
by a "hacker". Just because someone knows few things about computers doesn't make him
automatically moral or right.

2. 14 Army and Law-Enforcement Martyrs Laid to Rest

PROVINCES, (SANA) – The bodies of 14 army and law-enforcement forces martyrs on Monday were escorted from Tishreen and Aleppo military hospitals, the Police Hospital in Harasta and Sweida National Hospital to their final resting place.

The martyrs were killed by the armed terrorist groups while on duty in Damascus Countryside, Daraa, Idleb and Homs.

Regardless of the source of the above, I'm sure it's true that there are far more lethal attacks against the Syrian military than internet hacking.

Interesting that that I learned - the Minister of Defense in Syria is a Christian. I wonder if there is any other Arab country with a Christian Minister of Defense.

3. Well, if they want to attack, them they must be expect to be attacked back.

Btw, a huge number have defected because of the brutality by the soldiers.

Apparently the FSA took out a very notorious sniper who had killed many - including women and children.

How the hell is sniping fair?

You do not convince anyone. Assad is a bastard just like his father.

5. There are much better people that could lead Syria than Assad.

Either way, it's facile to blithely say "if they want to attack." You do realize there is conscription in Syria, right? Syrian soldiers are sons of the people.

And by your logic, the FSA can also "expect to be attacked." And, for that matter, so can other non-state actors, which does include those nominally supportive of the state, but outside it. This conflict is highly sectarian. Many of the Sunni mosques are seriously agitating against Shiites, Alawi people, and Christians. And there have been Alawi attacks against Sunnis as well. This is about much more than Bashar Assad, himself a rather diminutive figure in all senses.

9. Yes, that's a civil war.

It is not logic, it is what it is, and it includes more actors than I care to point to.

And it is not just those you mentioned. But I will leave it at that, will not be even half way news until it is in the situation room.

14. Well to be honest there are "elections" in Syria every so often

I guess it's really easy to win when you are the only candidate for president.

But there are elections, not what anybody half way educated on the issue would call open.

4. Riddle me this

Why do you think this is the case? Have you looked into the ethnic alliances? I am sure you too can find the real explanation in five minutes or so... But I will point you in right direction allawi-Christian alliance and Syria.

Oh and I will spare you the rather graphic photos or videos...

I mean civil wars, all thoughts to the contrary, are not civil.

I know, crunchy and all that, but hey I have in my computer a few SANA releases too...you do know they are the government mouth pieces, right?

Is there an "Alawi-Christian alliance?" Only in a tactical sense, because they both face the real danger of Salafi extremism that would utterly decimate their communities.

7. There you go...good

That is why you got a christian defense minister and why they are also part of elite army units.

As to SANA, they have gotten really, and I mean this, really comical or transparent. Did you also follow Baghdad bob and believe him? His best momemt was when he claimed the Abrams in the distance were republican guard.

8. Please do point out the disinformation.

I think that would be helpful. Mainly SANA has opinion pieces, and then articles stating that roughly equal numbers of soldiers and armed opposition have been killed. There's a lot of stress of military casualties. I don't think any media in Syria is pretending that there isn't a crisis. Further, it's not as if the Syrian opposition is like the US army.

10. SANA has told us a few times that all will be fine if the people trust Assad.

That train left the station a while ago.

And no, the FSA and the army share very Russian doctrine, anything else you'd like to know?

But did SANA mention that many conscripts have refused to report for duty...I guess it was an error in their part.

Don't worry, a lot of this is not in our media either, yet.
