i know i know its not a "state"
still it has its own culture and feel as if it were
so i include you d.c.
i have been to dc many times from a child to an adult
i never get over the thrill when the buildings come into view
the capitol
the white house
the mall and all it contains
i noted in another of these that i am a vacation historian and dc is a treasure trove
from the strip joint downtown that the feds used to run (got it in a judgement) to secret tunnels all over town this place is awesome
the smithsonian alone would take an actual week just to see everything and that means no stopping just looking lookning looking
this is truely the golden city on the hill for the us
it is our rome our athens
it is humid as satans buttcrack in the summer though so plan well
i forgot the cherry blossom festival another must see event

(11,138 posts)DC is also Benning Road. DC is South Capitol St. DC is large swaths up near the Children's Hospital in NE that tourists will NEVER see. DC is the stretch of Potomac Avenue that I thought I wouldn't escape alive after deciding to walk home from a Washington Diplomats game. DC is the city that continues somehow to think that Marion Barry is electable.
Don't misunderstand, I LOVE that city, but the city is far, far more than just what visitors see. It has it's problems, big ones. Just trying to clean up the damage Michelle Rhee did will probably take decades. The DC Police didn't exactly do themselves proud dealing with their Occupy encampment either.
It is what it is. And I will love it til the day I die.

(5,105 posts)Haven't been there in years, but it's wonderful. Any visitor should plan on spending two weeks, but you still won't see it all.
Also, too, I agree with the poster that spoke of places tourists don;t usually get to. Some of my fave places are the fish market on the river in SE, eastern market, Chinatown. Loved walking from Arlington Cemetery to Lincoln Memorial.
Unfortunately, too many repigs there, for now anyway.

(17,055 posts)Ive never been but always wanted to. Its one of those places that I want to explore sooner rather than later. It has so much to see and do its hard to wrap your head around it all.
There is just too much!
Heres a link to their official website:

But there are also many, many other websites online.

Too many tourists for cherry blossoms, but they are a sight to behold. When the blossoms come off the trees, it's like a big snowstorm but warmer.
One of the easiest cities to navigate in. Given an address you can go right to it without a map. LeEnfant knew what he was doing.
The only city I know that you can get almost any cuisine cooked authentically.
If you can get an invitation, I highly recommend any party thrown by the UK embassy.
Way too much security these days.
Park police seem to have trouble telling the difference between a brick and a bottle of coke.
There are many museums that are not part of the Smithsonian and are well worth your time.

(81,859 posts)I first went there for Clintons inauguration and it didn't feel very safe. The last few times I've been there it's been great. I love the area around Howard University and the monuments. I really want to spend more time at the sights in DC. Last time I was there I went to VA and ate at Rays Hell Burger which was pretty cool. Time before that I went to Palena.
