If you thought the commercial was racist....check this out! They even WRITE THE COPY in Miss Swan speak...(sorry for the Mad TV ref but I wish the lady who did that character would spoof these ads!!)
"Your economy get very weak, ours get very good."

I've stripped it from the web sites of several companies in the last few years.

And his ad could incite attacks against Asian Americans who were actually born in the US.

(135,425 posts)GOP conventions are either on the stage singing, or working in other capacities. That's a "forty foot pole" institution, as in "I wouldn't touch it with a...."
Edited to add--that woman in that commercial is about as native Chinese as Paddy's Pig. They should find her, and ask her WTF was she THINKING? The Charlie Chan movies in the thirties were less racist than that shit!

(8,244 posts)I always get the impression that they have to pay minorities to stand in front of the cameras at the convention.
I felt bad for the girl in the ad. I figure she is a struggling actress really looking for that break. She probably has to take whatever work she can get. I certainly hope it paid well.

(135,425 posts)I'd be curious to learn if this woman knew the context of the job or was just given a line and told to say it.
She could be someone who isn't political and who doesn't follow election contests at all, and thought the ad was something it wasn't.
I feel sorry for her as well. We know that in Hollywood way back when, actors had no choice if they wanted to work in their profession--unless they were in a film or play with a director from their same group, or a director with some sensitivity and a writer with basic human decency, they were often stuck acting out a stereotype.
And speaking of a stereotype, that awful thing has it all--it's very tone deaf. I'm surprised the idiot didn't use that typical racist Chinese musical riff to fire the thing off--you know, this one (this guy calls it like it is):

(23,340 posts)I think they were mostly very uncomfortable with the ad. Hoekstra's a moron, and he's not listening to the Republican handlers.

(12,022 posts)Hard to believe that a guy who's an immigrant thinks he's more American than mutli-generational American families with Chinese last names.

(135,425 posts)I can imagine how a 'solid' Republican of Chinese American heritage, whose forebears survived the horrors of working on the railroad and all sorts of discrimination down the years, might react after having a look at that ghastly thing.
I think it would be enough to consider a party affiliation change, at least to the "Independent" rolls.
