Krugman: The Gods Themselves Contend In Vain

The Gods Themselves Contend In Vain

The basic idea behind Keynesian support for stimulus/opposition to austerity under current conditions is that when private demand is weak and monetary policy is up against the zero lower bound, there is no offset to changes in government spending. This shouldn’t be a hard concept to grasp — in particular, you would think that anyone posing as an economist could grasp the conditional nature of the statement. But, well … some short takes just from the past few days:

Soup kitchens caused the Great Depression.

Clinton cut spending in a booming economy, which continued to boom. Huh? Huh?

Please tell me this report is false.

Must-read insignts into the depraved/desperate conservative mind.

advertisers and media outlets that continue to support these crackpot ideas.

Milton Friedman has been proven to promulgate crackpot ideas. As has Hayak; the U of Chicago Econ Dept; the editorial pages of the WSJ and Barrons, etc.

His histories are only one step above David Barton's crypto-Confederate fantasies, and he's a deplorable human being more interested in self-promotion than academia.

Not a science. It is not surprising that the cultists are illogical and irrational.

I read those, and its like afterthoughts instead of really digging in to the points he's making.

One huge thing he seems to miss in his battle, however commendable, against austerity is the tax side.

It would weaken the case for austerity if the Bush tax cuts had expired.

Just like that, the ten year deficit would be $3.7 trillion stronger.

And yet Krugman thought that ATRA, which created that $3.7 trillion tax cut, mostly for the rich, was a good idea.

Yet Obama is now in the SAME ridiculous position as the Republicans. Claiming the country NEEDS $1.7 trillion in spending cuts, while at the same time having given $2.4 trillion in tax cuts to the top 20%.

...you post this claim, I'll remind you that it's nonsense. http://election.democraticunderground.com/?com=view_post&forum=1002&pid=2766803
