(1,589 posts)soup kitchens and shelters and such. Recall Bush 43s "faith based charity" initiatives and how he was basically going to hand hundreds of millions to 'christian' charities....until they all realized that the buddist charities actually do the most work. Pfftb. Cant find those crazy people now can we...took alot of the wind out of those sails.
News to me.
Most homeless shelters and nutrition are based out of christian churches.
I'm sure buddists are nice people and help too, but they don't have the numbers to make a real dent.

(924 posts)not meant to spoil the fun, but wish to have the stats on the religious persuasion and the income of the population that walks by him (for a meaningful measurement of what he wants to test, which is $/(percentage of a religion*income) ).
You mean to say this might not be a scientific poll?
Damn the homeless and their lax statistical standards!!!

(924 posts)and it specifically says "just to wish, not a criticism"
On the other hand, professional social scientists & psychologists do do this kind of research also. It is easy to count the number of people putting money in each bowl (which is the stats on religious persuasion) and if one really presses, one can have an experimenter (usually a pretty girl or a wholesome looking guy - depending on the donor gender) interview a donor afterward right around the corner about the income range.

(5,770 posts)...hang two different slogans over the sink in a public place and measure the amount of soap used. "Washing your hands will keep YOU healthy" vs. "Washing your hands will keep EVERYONE healthy".
This was done in hospital wash stations with the result that the altruistic slogan induced more vigorous hand washing, as measured by use of soap.

(924 posts)increase of decrease the sense of altruism.
He needs to travel around, get some neighborhood statistics, make a pie chart. And power point presentation.
And I don't think plastic bowls is a good choice, perhaps fine bone china bowls would do better in harsh weather.
And he needs to add some political options for dems reps and other.
You know what let's just schedule another meeting on this for say 3 months from now and see where we are in the planning process of this experiment. You know, before we actually implement it.

(25,592 posts)He is obviously not one of "them", so why should they help him? They would say, 'if he would only believe, he would be rewarded in Heaven'.
Either way, the religious can see no point in actually helping anyone in the here and now, not of their own church.
"The notion that faith in Christ is to be rewarded by an eternity of bliss, while a dependence upon reason, observation and experience merits everlasting pain, is too absurd for refutation, and can be relieved only by that unhappy mixture of insanity and ignorance, called "faith." "

What are the demographics where he's set up? How may people of each belief walked by him, how many of those people had cash on them, or cash to spare? Was he in an arts district? Outside MIT? A few feet away from a church, mosque or temple? It's only a ploy to pit people against each other.
Plus, he could have divided up the donations in any way he wanted.
Means nothing.

(27,787 posts)Notice how even on DU, he's got folks all worked up. That's the real goal. Get a passerby worked up enough to drop some cash, doesn't matter which bowl the money goes in. He's not going to write it down and keep score or write a paper for a Journal.
But if he can get folks on DU worked up with a pic, you know folks passing by will have to do something.

(27,787 posts)and imagine how much more salient it is when some one actually walks past him.
We're seeing this from a safe distance ... and some are getting worked up even then ... even with distance and time to think it through ... people walking past won't have that distance. Their reactions will likely be more pronounced.
And he gets more money ... very smart.
