What creeps, they assembled a list of names and headshots of their persons of interest to block access to their event.

Center for Media and Democracy Research Director Nick Surgey obtained press credentials at the ALEC registration desk. As he ascended the escalator towards the room where Governor Fallin was speaking, though, he was spotted by two ALEC staffers, and within minutes approached by a uniformed Oklahoma City police officer.
"I need those credentials," the officer said.
"I registered," Surgey replied.
"No you didn't," said a female ALEC staffer, who was accompanying the officer.
I did, downstairs," he said.
It was you shouldnt have been able to.
The reason Surgey shouldn't have been allowed to register, according to the ALEC staffer, is Because we know who you are.

(12,712 posts)That is, unless you consider "behind closed doors" efforts to give major corporations. (and the people who run them) a normal part of your system and rightfully conducting business this way.
It even took a while for this tentacle of the Koch Political Toolbox (tm) to be seen on the radar.
Now it is becoming clear that they are making greater efforts to keep as much of their actions as private or exclusive as possible and that's not a good sign.
ALEC Exposed is an interesting watchdog and their summation is:
In ALEC's own words, corporations have "a VOICE and a VOTE" on specific changes to the law that are then proposed in your state. DO YOU? Numerous resources to help us expose ALEC are provided below. We have also created links to detailed discussions of key issues, which are available on the left.
http://www.alecexposed.org/wiki/ALEC_Exposed
They are by no means the only source on this topic. If you are concerned about just how many tentacles of contrivance have reached into your government, local or national, this is an important subject. There are far more things going on out of view than we can imagine.

(32,342 posts)I was just talking to an older activist last weekend who hadn't heard of ALEC. Although we talk about them here on DU all the time, I didn't really have anything distilled down to describe it to him.

(12,712 posts)Thanks for letting me know you were not aware of it. That's the kicker, ey?
We are busy here talking party this vs. party that, "voting" and many are watching a corporate media show of celebration and "values" while a insidious cabal works to undermine what is left of our notions of liberty and justice. I am not being sensationalistic or exaggerating when I say that.
And, as I said, this is the more obvious aspect of the Junta whose revolution started a long time ago and is in full gear now. The new method seems to be a covert, (yet seemingly legitimate) way of subverting and influencing our body politic while still maintaining a beleivable facade of "democracy" or "representation".
It is rather overwhelming, but keep in mind that putting the spotlight on it is a part of the solution. A flashlight sure helps when you have rats in your basement. As we can see by ALEC's devastating impact on certain states, this is one conspiracy that needs to be exposed, and reckoned with or deal with the consequences of what can be considered a neo-Fascist threat. It comes in various styles and flavors.

For over 30 years they were able to do their dirty work virtually undetected before they were finally exposed to the light of day. Apparently, like kochroaches, they cannot stand the light.

(4,748 posts)Years ago, when I first stated my little Junque Shop the NFIB came around and said they lobbied for small businesses like mine, so I ponied up the dues. Over the course of the year, I saw that they were not lobbying in my best interests. When the guy came around to see why I had not renewed my membership, I explained that he was lobbying the exact opposite on nearly all issues. He became quite angry and stormed out. Now, whenever I see the NFIB sticker in a small shop or business, I always say something about how they really do not represent the interests of small business.

National Federation of Independent Businesses. Sell themselves as lobbying for small business, but pretty much follow the Right Wing (fascist) agenda. Lots of little shop owners fall for this and pay dues to an organization that actually does them great harm.

(62,325 posts)'enemies' list calling them heroes. ALEC is now on the run after 40 years of secrecy, of writing our laws, of buying our politicians, many Corps who were funding them have been shamed into dropping their membership. The pressure needs to continue and increase until they are GONE.
Color For Change has done great work on exposing Politicians affiliated with ALEC, causing some of them to drop their endorsements of the anti-Constitutional Organization.
I wonder how many more secret organizations working to subvert the Constitution and take over our Government there are? I would have thought this to be inconceivable just a couple of years ago.

"Jane Carter, an economist at AFSCME, identified the problems with the ALEC privatization agenda, particularly the Public-Private Fair Competition Act, a "forced privatization" bill that requires public services be turned over to corporate control if private industry claims they can do the service; this bill was recently introduced in Michigan. Phillip Martin of Progress Texas described how ALEC's healthcare agenda -- particularly its adoption of the Health Care Compact, which asserts state control over health care -- could be used to thwart federal healthcare reform."
